Lehigh to face Navy in Patriot League Semifinals Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a convincing 15-5 Patriot League Quarterfinal win over Bucknell on Tuesday, the third-seeded Lehigh women's lacrosse team is set to square off against second-seeded Navy in the semifinals this Friday. Opening draw is set for 7:45 p.m. at Loyola's Ridley Athletic Complex and can be seen live through the Patriot League Network. Lehigh vs. Navy will be the second game of the semifinal doubleheader following Boston University vs. Loyola at 5 p.m.

The Mountain Hawks continued their success from the regular season finale at Bucknell, jumping out to a 9-1 lead in Tuesday's quarterfinals and cruising to the 15-5 victory, their largest-ever margin of victory in the Patriot League Tournament. After being tied at three late in the first half of Friday's regular season game, Lehigh outscored the Bison 24-6 over the final 97:15.

Senior Allison LaBeau led the offense with a record-breaking performance. She finished with a Patriot League Tournament single-game record 11 points and six assists (both career highs), also tying a season-high five goals. LaBeau's 11 points were tied for fifth most by anyone in Division I college lacrosse this season, also shattering her previous career high of eight points. Tuesday marked her 10th straight game with five or more points. She is now up to 89 points on the season, most points for a Lehigh player since Jill Altshuler had 89 in 1995. LaBeau is now tied for second in school history for points in a season, only behind Altshuler's 119 in 1996. In Tuesday's game, LaBeau eclipsed 100 career assists while she reached 255 career points, moving into ninth place in Patriot League history in career scoring.

Four other Mountain Hawks scored two goals apiece: freshman Sondra Dickey, who scored the game's first two goals, and sophomores Courtney Henig, Jane Henderson and Kellie Gough. Henig's second goal marked the 50th of her career. Defensively, Lehigh caused 18 of Bucknell's 20 turnovers as 13 different Mountain Hawks had at least one caused turnover. Senior Lauren Beausoleil had two caused turnovers, while also adding a goal, two groundballs and a game-high four draw controls. Lehigh won 12-of-13 first-half draw controls to finish the game with a dominant 16-5 edge. Sophomore Olivia Kelly set a career-high six groundballs to eclipse 50 in her career.

Lehigh improved to 3-1 all-time at home in the Patriot League Tournament, winning a home quarterfinal contest for a second straight year. Last season, the fourth-seeded Mountain Hawks defeated Colgate, 13-6. Over the last four seasons, Lehigh has improved by one spot in the final standings, which included a Patriot League Tournament appearance each time. The Mountain Hawks finished sixth in 2014, fifth in 2015, fourth in 2016 and third this year.

Lehigh will face Navy in the Patriot League Tournament for the fourth time with the Midshipmen winning each of the previous three. The last time the teams met was in the 2011 Patriot League Semifinals at Colgate, a 10-8 Midshipmen victory.

Navy is 13-4 this season, having won four straight games and eight of its last nine contests. The Midshipmen's four losses have been at Duke (20-12), vs. Boston College (20-11), against Loyola (13-9) and at Virginia (16-13). Patriot League Midfielder of the Year Julia Collins leads the team with 55 goals and 80 points while adding 30 groundballs, 59 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers. Rookie of the Year Kelly Larkin owns 76 points via 38 goals and 38 assists while Morgan Young has 63 points (45 goals, 18 assists). Julia Collins owns 56 points (31 goals, 25 assists) along with a team-leading 85 draw controls. Blake Smith leads the team in caused turnovers (28) while Marie Valenti has 36 groundballs, most on the Midshipmen. Ingrid Boyum has seen the majority of time in goal, recording a 9.55 goals against average and .387 save percentage.

Navy has won seven straight games vs. Lehigh to take a 9-4 lead in the all-time series. The Mountain Hawks won four of the first six meetings before the Midshipmen responded with seven in a row. The sides first met in 2008, with Lehigh winning 15-12. Lehigh's most recent victory in the series came on Apr. 23, 2011 at Navy by a 15-13 final.

If the Mountain Hawks win on Friday, they would advance to the Patriot League Championship Game for the first time since 2010. They would face either top seed Loyola or fourth-seeded Boston University on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Loyola's Ridley Athletic Complex.
