BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After closing out the home portion on its schedule on Sunday, the Lehigh baseball team will return to action on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Jersey City for a matchup with Saint Peter's. It will be the first of Lehigh's four-game road trip to end the year. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. from Joseph J. Jaroschak Field.
The Mountain Hawks' (20-26) Patriot League Tournament hopes ended last weekend when they split a four-game set with Army. Lehigh needed to win three out of the four games to stay alive going in to the series. After the Mountain Hawks took two out of the first three matchups and secured a 5-4 lead late in the final game, the Black Knights scored four runs in the final two innings to earn an 8-5 victory and salvage the series split.
Playing in his last series at home, senior David Young shined all weekend as he tallied eight hits in 13 at bats including three homers. Young also drove in 11 RBIs to anchor the Lehigh offense.
A duo of freshmen starters in Jason Reynolds and Levi Stoudt led the Mountain Hawks on the mound in the series. Reynolds received a no decision through his 6.1 innings of work, allowing two runs on seven hits and posting seven strikeouts in game two of the series. Stoudt tossed 6.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts to earn the win in game three.
Saint Peter's will try to end its season-long skid against Farleigh Dickinson on Tuesday before hosting the Mountain Hawks on Wednesday. The Peacocks have lost all 27 of their games this season, including a 10-3 loss to the Mountain Hawks in Bethlehem earlier this year.
The Peacocks are hitting .228 as a team this season, with a .287 slugging percentage. Saint Peter's has 34 extra-base hits this season, including seven home runs. Paul Schifilliti leads the team in hits (28) and batting average (.373), on base percentage (.413), and slugging percentage (.453).
Lehigh is 6-1 in the all-time series with Saint Peter's which began in 1997. The Mountain Hawks have won the last three meetings, including this year's matchup in March.
Following this game, Lehigh will close out its 2017 season with a three-game set against Longwood. The Mountain Hawks will play a doubleheader on Friday and the final game on Saturday.
