BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball welcomed the Army West Point Black Knights back to J. David Walker Field for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks dropped a 4-2 decision in a seven-inning game one while falling 13-9 in game two.
Army (18-14, 9-6 PL) starting pitcher Kevin Reavey received the win in game one after allowing only two runs with five strikeouts in 4.2 innings despite walking seven batters. Josiah Overbeek picked up his fourth save of the season for the Black Knights while Lehigh (8-24, 3-12 PL) starter Sam Fairhurst was tagged with the loss despite a solid showing of five strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
The Mountain Hawks got on the board first thanks to a Dom Patrizi sac-fly in the bottom of the second. Chris Barr provided a response for the Black Knights in the top of the third, sending Overbeek home on an RBI bunt. Army extended its lead to two runs in the top of the fifth on RBIs from Thomas Schreck and Jack Quinlan.
Trailing by two, a bases loaded walk sent Max Dantoni past home plate and brought Lehigh within one in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a scoreless sixth, Army's William Parker sent Barr past home plate on an RBI single to give his team a two-run cushion in the top of the seventh. The Mountain Hawks managed to get two runners on base in the bottom of the frame, but Overbeek managed to record the outs necessary to win game one for the Black Knights.
Dantoni, Aidan Quinn, Trystan Crawford, and Patrizi provided Lehigh's hits. Max Treonze appeared in relief of Fairhurst in the seventh inning.
Army starter Trey Ates earned the win in game two, striking out three batters while only giving up one hit in 6.0 innings. Mark Abell picked up his first save of the season after allowing one run in 2.1 innings of relief. Lehigh starter Cole Leaman was credited with the loss.
Schreck got things started for the Black Knights in the top of the first with an RBI single before Robbie Carvelli scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the second to tie the game 1-1. Army then added three runs between the third and fourth innings to lead 4-1 through four innings.
The Mountain Hawks faced a large deficit after the fifth, as six Black Knight runs came across the plate in the top of the fifth inning. Parker delivered a solo home run to left field in the top of the seventh, and all of the sudden the Mountain Hawks were three outs away from the mercy while having not yet recorded a hit.
Needing to score to keep themselves in the game, Lehigh's offense got going in the bottom of the seventh. A bases loaded hit by pitch got things started before Silvio Giardina's single to left center drew home two runs. Patrizi then scored on a fielders choice while Crawford and Ian Wirtz batted home three more runs to pull Lehigh within three after seven innings.
In the top of the eighth, Parker doubled down the left field line and sent two more runs past home plate to extend Army's lead to five. A Quinn RBI single trimmed the deficit back down to four, but ultimately the Black Knights managed to hang on.
Both Crawford and Giardina went 2-4 in game two while Quinn and Wirtz provided Lehigh's additional hits in the game. Brandon Coughlin, David Andolina, Shane O'Neill, and Ryan Holman appeared on the mound in addition to Leaman.
The Mountain Hawks will conclude the weekend series against the Black Knights on Sunday, April 12 at 1 p.m. from J. David Walker Field.
