JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Mountain Hawks tied their third-highest run total of the season on their second-highest hit total (17) with a 15-5 victory at Saint Peter's in a seven-inning contest on Wednesday.
Lehigh (21-26) recorded its 15th multi-home run game of the season and has seven homers in the last four games after Jacen Nalesnik and James Bleming went deep on the day. Nalesnik hit his team and Patriot League leading 13th homer of the season when he poked a two-run shot in the third inning to put Lehigh back in the lead. Bleming left the yard in grand fashion as his grand slam capped off a five-run fourth inning for the Mountain Hawks.
Nalesnik is now tied with Mike Garzillo '16 for the program's single-season home run record with his 13 homers this year. The senior also moves into a tie with Garzillo for second on the program's career home run list with 22. The career record for home runs is 28, held by Jesse Novalis '04.
After surrendering a run in the first inning, the Peacocks (0-29) got on the board and evened up the score with a run of their own in the second inning. The Mountain Hawks went to work offensively and compiled 10 runs through the third, fourth and fifth innings. Lehigh sealed the victory with three runs in the seventh inning of five hits, including an RBI single by David Young and a two-run double by Thomas Schumacher.
Saint Peter's has surrendered double-digit runs five times in its last six games and twice to Lehigh this season as the Mountain Hawks have outscored the Peacocks 25-8 in the two meetings. The Peacocks have struggled to put runs on the board as they have not held a lead through a full inning it its last 11-straight games.
Chris Kersey, Nalesnik, Bleming and Connor Donovan all led Lehigh with three runs each on the day. Kersey, Nalesnik and Donnelly led with three hits each and Bleming led with four RBI on the day.
Mike Gibbons entered in the middle of a jam in the fifth inning with runners on, worked out of the tough spot and tossed the final 3.0 innings of the game. He surrendered just two hits and was not charged with a run as he struck out four batters. Gibbons earns the win first for his first victory of his career as he improves to 1-0.
The Mountain Hawks will finish out the season with one final road trip. Lehigh will head to Longwood for a three-game weekend set with the Lancers, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
