BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a thrilling 13-12 victory over Boston University last weekend, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team will hit the road to Army West Point on Saturday. Opening draw from West Point, New York is set for 3:30 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. Lehigh comes into the game 8-3 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Down 10-7 against Boston University, the Mountain Hawks scored six straight goals to take a 13-10 lead. BU then scored twice within a minute to cut Lehigh's lead to one with 6:14 remaining. With two seconds remaining in regulation, the Terriers had a free-position opportunity, but a false start gave Lehigh the ball, allowing the Mountain Hawks to secure their second straight one-goal win against the Terriers. Since Boston University joined the league, the teams have split six meetings. Four of the six contests have been one-goal games with Lehigh 3-1 in those contests.
Senior Julianne D'Orazio led the charge, recording a career-high four goals. She now has five straight games with multiple goals after recording multiple goals once in her first six contests. Senior Allison LaBeau added three goals and two assists to reach 49 points on the season, currently good for 22nd in the nation. Senior Taylor Tvedt also had a career-high 13 saves, which was her second straight double-digit save performance.
Behind LaBeau's 49 points is junior Haley Wentzel, who has 26 points (23 goals, three assists). Sophomore Courtney Henig is right behind with 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists). D'Orazio leads the team in both groundballs (33) and caused turnovers (23). Tvedt is 20th in the country in save percentage (.482).
Army is 4-8 on the season but has lost its last seven games, dropping to 0-4 in the Patriot League. Most recently, the team lost to Navy 22-7 last Saturday. The Black Knights have been close in their other three league contests, falling to Lafayette (15-11), Bucknell (11-8) and Holy Cross (12-9). Junior midfielder Rachel Hornick leads the team in points with 38 (29 goals, nine assists), while sophomore midfielder Manuela Cortes leads the team in goals with 33. Freshman goalie Maddie Burns has a team-high 22 groundballs and senior defender Shelby Lindsay has caused a team-high 16 turnovers. Army uses two goalies - Burns and Kayla Rowley - but Burns leads the way with a 10.21 goals against average and a 4-1 record.
Last season, Lehigh beat Army 14-6, which was the Black Knights' first-ever year with a Division I program. LaBeau led the Mountain Hawks in that game, notching seven points. Senior Lauren Beausoleil had five groundballs and six caused turnovers.
Following Saturday's contest, the Lehigh will host Loyola in a key Patriot League matchup next Saturday, Apr. 15 at 1 p.m.
