WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team broke open a slim 5-3 halftime lead with a 7-0 second-half run, on its way to a 15-8 win at Army West Point on Saturday afternoon. LaBeau led the Mountain Hawks' (9-3, 4-1 Patriot League) attack with a season-high five goals, while the Lehigh defense caused 19 of the Black Knights' 27 turnovers on the afternoon.
"It was a good win for us today," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Army played tough. They play a zone, which is a little bit tough to get through. I thought our performance was a little bit streaky, but fortunately, we put together a couple runs, which was enough."
LaBeau added an assist for six points. Classmate Julianne D'Orazio scored two goals and dished an assist, recording her sixth straight multi-goal games. In the process, D'Orazio eclipsed 50 career points while she added five groundballs to surpass 100 groundballs in her career.
Senior Lauren Beausoleil, junior Haley Wentzel and freshman Autumn Ryan each scored two goals as well. Beausoleil, junior Kierstyn Voiro and sophomore Mary Ellen Carron each tallied three caused turnovers, marking a career high for Carron.
Beausoleil opened the scoring, but the Black Knights scored two straight to take an early lead. A 3-0 Mountain Hawks' run was capped off by LaBeau, who scored her first of the game to give Lehigh a 4-2 advantage with 16:35 remaining in the first half.
Army pulled within 6-4 in the second half, but a 7-0 Mountain Hawks' run helped them create separation. The run began with a free-position goal from Wentzel, and included a pair of goals from LaBeau. Her fifth of the game gave the Mountain Hawks a 13-4 advantage with 14:04 remaining in the second half. Army went on a late 3-0 run, but Ryan scored her second as time came to a close, accounting for the 15-8 final.
Final shots were 32-20 in favor of the Mountain Hawks while Lehigh held a 26-16 edge in groundballs. Senior Taylor Tvedt finished with eight saves in goal, across Army's Maddie Burns, who tallied 10.
Next up, Lehigh will host Loyola in a key Patriot League matchup next Saturday, Apr. 15 at 1 p.m.
"It's definitely a big game on our schedule," said Redfern. "We've been looking forward to it for a long time. It's such a fun game, really competitive. We're happy to move into practice now and get ready for that game."
