2017 TOURNAMENT HOMEPAGE – 2017 BRACKET – LEHIGH STATISTICS – BUCKNELL STATISTICS
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The third-seeded Lehigh men's tennis team begins its quest for its second Patriot League title on Friday at 1:30 p.m. with a matchup against No. 6 Bucknell in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament. Navy is the host for the 2017 Patriot League Men's Tennis Championship and all matches will be played at the U.S. Naval Academy tennis facilities.
The Mountain Hawks (7-13, 5-2) garnered the No. 3 seed in the tournament after finishing the regular season with the third-highest league winning percentage (.714). The Bison (10-17, 3-4) enter as the sixth seed after finishing with a .429 winning percentage in regular season league play.
Third is the highest seeding for Lehigh since garnering the second seed in 2013. The Mountain Hawks have been seeded third or higher four times since 2011. Bucknell has been the sixth seed in back-to-back seasons and three times in the last four seasons.
The Mountain Hawks and Bison have faced each other eight times in postseason play since the Patriot League went to a team tournament format in 1994. Bucknell owns a 5-3 advantage in the all-time postseason series, but Lehigh won the most recent meeting with a 4-3 victory in 2013 semifinal round.
Friday's matchup will be a rematch of an Easter Sunday meeting earlier in the week which Lehigh prevailed with a 4-1 victory. The final score is not indicative of how close the match was as all but two singles matches went to a third set and all three doubles matches were decided by three games or less.
Jack Petersen, Christopher Auteri and Ethan Bogard each notched singles victories for Lehigh in the regular season meeting, while Bryan Adams captured Bucknell's lone singles win. The Mountain Hawks claimed doubles victories at the first and third flights, both by scores of 6-4.
Bogard will be in the lineup for Friday's match and enters the postseason with Lehigh's best overall winning percentage (.692) with an overall record of 9-4 and a league mark of 4-1. Jack Martin-Dyer will also be in the postseason lineup as he owns the second-best league winning percentage (.750) on the team with a record of 3-1. Petersen owns the most league wins with a record of 5-2 and Colin Nardella will also crack the lineup with a solid record of 4-2 in league play.
Max Kane leads Bucknell's lineup with a 3-1 mark in Patriot League play and Bryan Adams also posted three league wins with a record of 3-2 as he will also be in the lineup on Friday. All other projected Friday starters for Bucknell possess losing records in league play.
The winner of Friday's match will advance to the semifinal round to face the winner of the No. 2 Navy/No. 7 Loyola match on Saturday at 2 p.m. Lehigh suffered a 7-0 loss to Navy in the regular season and beat Loyola 6-1.
The tournament is single elimination and the two finalist will square off on in the championship match at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Lehigh has advanced to the final match twice (2011, 2013) and defeated Navy, 4-0, in 2013 to capture the only Patriot League title in program history.
