BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After coming one goal shy of Loyola on Saturday, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team will go on the road to Easton to face Lafayette on Wednesday. The matchup is set to start at 7 p.m. Lehigh will enter the game 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the league after, for the second straight season, nearly handing the Greyhounds their first-ever Patriot League defeat.
It was a game of runs against Loyola as the Greyhounds took a 4-0 lead just four minutes into the game. However, the Mountain Hawks fought back, going on a 4-0 run of their own over a six-minute span to tie the score midway through the first half. Loyola then went on a 4-1 run, but Lehigh countered with another four straight goals to take a 9-8 lead into halftime. Both offenses slowed down in the second half, especially at the end of the game; the contest ended with almost 13 scoreless minutes as Loyola eventually came away with a 12-11 victory.
Senior attacker Allison LaBeau recorded two goals and three assists while junior Haley Wentzel added three goals and an assist to lead Lehigh's offense. Seniors Lauren Beausoleil and Julianne D'Orazio each had two goals as well. Defensively, sophomore Olivia Kelly set a career high with four caused turnovers while senior goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt added three groundballs and 11 saves, tied for her second-highest save total of the season.
On the year, LaBeau leads the team in points with 60 (29 goals, 31 assists). Sophomore Courtney Henig is next with 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) while Wentzel is right behind with 32 points (28 goals, four assists). On the defensive side, D'Orazio leads with 40 groundballs and 26 caused turnovers; she also has a team-high 25 draw controls. Meanwhile, in goal, it was Tvedt's third time in the last four games with double-digit saves.
Lafayette, who is 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the Patriot League, is in the middle of its first season with double-digit wins since 2002 when it advanced to the NCAA Tournament. So far, the Leopards' only league loss was against Boston University, a 20-16 shootout. They have yet to play Loyola and Navy, who currently stand first and tied for second in the league.
Lafayette is tied for the sixth-best scoring offense in the nation at 15.50 goals per game, but is tied for 69th in scoring defense, allowing 12.36goals per contest. Individually, the Leopards have three players with more than 40 goals, including senior Kirsten Wilhelmsen, who has 57 goals and 21 assists. She's tied for third in the country with 78 points. Sophomore Jane Kirby is next with 48 goals and six assists, while sophomore Emma Novick has 41 goals and 12 assists. Charlotte Rath leads the team in groundballs with 35 while Wilhelmsen leads in caused turnovers with 26. The team has used two goalies nearly equally, Anna Raymond and Allie Abacherli, although Raymond has recorded more starts with eight. She has posted a 12.21 goals against average and .414 save percentage while Abacherli has tallied a 12.70 GAA and .352 save percentage.
The Mountain Hawks are 26-21 all time against the Leopards, including a 6-4 victory at the Ulrich Sports Complex last year. Henig led the way in that game with two goals while Tvedt allowed just four goals, her lowest total in all league games last year.
Following Wednesday's contest, Lehigh will play its final regular season home game in a matchup against Colgate on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. It will be Senior Day as Lauren Beausoleil, Krista Dampman, Julianne D'Orazio, Allison LaBeau and Taylor Tvedt will be recognized prior to opening draw.
