Lehigh defeats Boston University, 13-12 in thrilling comeback victory

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In a back-and-forth game that featured runs of four, six, and three goals, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team was able to hold off the Boston University Terriers by a score of 13-12 Saturday afternoon at Ulrich Sports Complex. Senior Julianne D'Orazio led the Mountain Hawks (8-3, 3-1 Patriot League) with a career-high four goals while fellow senior Allison LaBeau added five points on two goals and three assists.
After Boston University held an 11-3 edge in draw controls at half, Lehigh came back to win eight of 13 in the second half, which helped the Mountain Hawks control possession and ultimately pull out their second straight one-goal victory against the Terriers.
"It was very exciting because we had to come from behind in that big stretch after halftime," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "To put that string together and do so much better on the draw in the second half required some toughness on our part. There was big progress for our team today."
The teams entered Saturday tied for third place in the Patriot League with 2-1 league marks.
"They're a real good team and we're a really good team," said Redfern. "It was such an even and well-played game. It could have gone either way, but I think our team earned it at the end. Mary Ellen's (Carron) caused turnover was huge to get us possession. Julianne had a big one too. Those two extra possessions made a difference at the end of the game."
Along with her four goals, D'Orazio added three groundballs, a draw control and caused turnover. Sophomore Mary Ellen Carron's caused turnover came on an interception with just over 30 seconds remaining and Lehigh leading by one. Sophomore Courtney Henig added two goals for the Mountain Hawks.
After a fast-paced first three minutes, which included Lehigh taking the early lead on a goal by Henig, Boston University was out in front 2-1. Lehigh pulled even at two following LaBeau's first goal of the game, then took the lead when LaBeau found freshman Sandra Dickey near the cage with just seconds left on the possession clock.
Lehigh was holding onto a 5-3 lead with just under ten minutes to go in the half before Boston University scored four straight goals to take the two-goal lead. It looked like that was the way the half would end, but Lehigh was able to cause a turnover with 30 seconds left and the ball eventually found D'Orazio, who scored to cut the halftime deficit to one.
After trading goals to start the second half, Boston scored the next two to take a 10-7 lead. With momentum seemingly on the Terriers side, Lehigh took it right back, staging a 6-0 run. A goal from senior Lauren Beausoleil eventually tied the score at 10 with just over 12 minutes to go in the game. Lehigh took the lead on LaBeau's third goal of the game while freshman Autumn Ryan and D'Orazio each added a goal to give Lehigh a 13-10 lead with 8:11 remaining. The Mountain Hawks were unable to put the Terriers away, as Boston scored twice to cut Lehigh's lead to 13-12. However, Lehigh senior goalie Taylor Tvedt made her 13th and biggest save of the game with 2:27 to go to preserve the one-goal lead. The 13 saves also set a career high.
The game was nearly even across the final stat sheet, with each team taking 35 shots, Lehigh holding a slight advantage in saves at 13-11 and in groundballs at 17-13, while Boston University had the 16-11 draw control advantage.
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday, Apr. 8 at 3:30 p.m. as they travel to Army West Point to take on the Black Knights.
