BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team will look to get back on track in its Patriot League schedule when it takes on Boston University this Saturday. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex, and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network. Lehigh is 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the league following a 16-9 loss to Navy on Wednesday.
Several events will surround Saturday's game. The Mountain Hawks are excited to host an Inclusion and Diversity Game through Lehigh Athlete Ally and Lehigh Student Senate, which begins with a pep rally at Lamberton Hall on campus at 11 a.m. There will be special warmup shirts, rainbow stick tape and ribbon, a catered pregame rally at Lamberton, an Ally pledge to sign and a special setup at the entrance of the game. The Goodman Bus Service will run at 11:15 and 11:45 a.m. from the Dialogue Center on Taylor Street. Free Pride shirts will also be given to the first 50 students at the game.
In addition, Lehigh Lacrosse is hosting a food drive for Saturday's doubleheader (Lehigh men's lacrosse also faces Boston University on Saturday at 3 p.m.). Fans can donate non-perishable food items, which will be collected and donated to New Bethany Ministries.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a tough loss to Navy Wednesday, snapping their 12-game home winning streak which was fifth longest in the nation. Junior Haley Wentzel grabbed the first goal of the game to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead early on, but Navy racked up four straight goals to lead 4-1 midway through the first half. The teams traded goals over the ensuing minutes before Navy scored another four unanswered goals to build its lead to 10-4 early in the second.
Lehigh scored three straight goals, two from senior Lauren Beausoleil and one from senior Allison LaBeau, to pull within 12-8 with 10:56 still remaining. However, another four straight goals from Navy allowed the Midshipmen to pull away.
LaBeau still managed six points in the game (one goal, career-high tying five assists) and is up to 44 points on the season. She's currently tied for 18th in the nation in points per game (4.4). Beausoleil, sophomore Courtney Henig and senior Julianne D'Orazio all had two goals for the Mountain Hawks as well. Senior goalie Taylor Tvedt, who had 11 saves including many point-blank stops, tied a season-high four groundballs.
BU enters Saturday's game with a 4-5 record (2-1 in the Patriot League) and has won three of its last four games. Two of its five losses were to ranked teams (Boston College and USC), and its most recent win was 18-8 over Colgate on Wednesday. There's a three-way tie for the team lead in points at 23 with Elisabeth Jayne, Taylor Hardison and Kailey Conry. Jayne leads in goals (19), and Conry leads in assists (20). Goalie Caroline Meegan has totaled a team-high 16 groundballs, while Maria Guerra has 13 caused turnovers for BU. Meegan has started all nine games in net, recording a 12.48 goals against average and .507 save percentage.
Lehigh and BU are currently tied for third in the Patriot League standings (with Navy), with each playing six more league games this year. Lehigh's last-second 8-7 victory at Boston University last season pulled the Mountain Hawks within 4-2 in the all-time series. In that game, Beausoleil scored the game-winner with just five seconds remaining. The first meeting between the two teams was in 1999 - a 17-9 BU win. Since, the teams have played at least once a year after BU entered the Patriot League in 2014.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks will go on the road to face Army West Point on Saturday, Apr. 8 at 3:30 p.m.
