BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming off a 1-2 opening weekend trip to Davidson, N.C. last weekend, the Lehigh baseball team will hit the road once again and take on Marshall for the first weekend series of the 2017 season. Despite posting a sub .500 coming out of opening weekend, the Mountain Hawks (1-2) own a plus-4 run differential on the season and the two losses came by a total of four runs. Lehigh came out of the gates strong with 16-8 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in the season opener. The offense hung 15 hits on the board with seven extra-base hits, including two home runs. Lehigh went deep two more times the next day, but came up short in a closely-contested 7-4 loss to Davidson. LU finished out the weekend with a 3-2 loss to UMass Lowell in a Sunday pitcher's duel.
Junior James Bleming led the offense last weekend as he went 6-for-13 at the plate with a triple and two RBI to open the season with a .462 batting average. Bleming is slugging .615 with an on-base percentage of .533 to go along with a 1.000 fielding percentage at the shortstop position.
Junior right-hander Mark Washington earned the lone victory on the weekend as he drew the start on opening day. The 6-foot-7 hurler tossed 4.0 innings as he allowed four hits and surrendered just one run. Sophomore Ethan Frohman had the top pitching performance from the weekend as he came in to throw the final 5.2 innings in relief against UMass Lowell. The Lefty shut down the River Hawk bats as he gave up no runs on just three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Marshall is off to a 2-5 start to the season and will host Lehigh in its home opening weekend. The Herd opened the season with a three-game road trip to Georgia on February 17-19 with losses to Georgia State and No. 21 Georgia Tech and ended with a 7-4 victory over Kennesaw State for their first win of the season. Marshall suffered a 7-0 setback on the road at Virginia Tech last Tuesday before dropping two out of three last weekend at Western Carolina. The Herd took the final game of the series against WCU, winning 10-6 with five home runs to bring their weekend total to nine.
Sam Finfer leads the Marshall offense with nine hits on the season, including a double and four home runs. The senior outfielder is batting .409 with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .458 on-base percentage. Freshman Hunter Sexton has been one of the most productive arms for Marshall on the season as he has allowed just one run on six hits in 6.2 innings of work with a 1.35 earned-run average and eight strikeouts. The right-hander is 1-0 with four relief appearances.
The Herd ended last season with 34-21 overall record and a 21-9 mark in Conference USA. Marshall finished last season second in the C-USA standings and ended the season with a loss to No. 3 seed Southern Miss in the semifinal round of the C-USA Tournament.
Lehigh will face Marshall for just the second series in program history. The two teams also got together last season in Huntington with the Herd sweeping the three-game series.Â
