Mountain Hawks drop 16-9 final to Navy
3/29/2017 9:54:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Sparked by a 20-7 edge in draw controls, Navy downed the Lehigh women's lacrosse team 16-9 on Wednesday evening, snapping the Mountain Hawks' (7-3, 2-1 Patriot League) 12-game home winning streak which was tied for the fifth longest home streak in the nation. Lehigh trailed 6-4 late in the first half, but the Midshipmen scored six of the next seven goals to take a commanding lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Boston University on Saturday at 12 p.m.
"The obvious problem with this game was our lack of draw control," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We just played way too much defense to be able to win the game, or even put ourselves in a position to win the game. The good news was that I thought we handled their defense pretty well. We scored some really beautiful goals. The draw control and just evening out the possession time will be important moving forward."
Senior Allison LaBeau led the Lehigh offense with a goal and career-high tying five assists. Seniors Julianne D'Orazio, Lauren Beausoleil and sophomore Courtney Henig all scored two goals.
Junior Haley Wentzel gave Lehigh an early 1-0 lead, but Navy answered with the next four. The teams traded goals the rest of the half as D'Orazio pulled Lehigh within 4-2 and Henig got the Mountain Hawks within 5-3, while the second LaBeau to D'Orazio connection pulled Lehigh within 6-4 with 5:36 left in the first.
However, Navy scored with 10 seconds left in the half, then opened the second on a 3-0 run to take a 10-4 lead. Down 12-5, the Mountain Hawks tallied three consecutive goals, two from Beausoleil and one from LaBeau, to pull within 12-8 with 10:56 still remaining. The Midshipmen answered with four of the final four to win, 16-9.
Navy finished with 36-16 edge in shots and 12-10 advantage in groundballs. Senior Taylor Tvedt made 11 saves, across Ingrid Boyum, who made six.
The Mountain Hawks return home on Saturday for another big Patriot League game as they host Boston University at 12 p.m.
"I think it's important that we put this game behind us," said Redfern. "It wasn't our best game, but I think we'll learn from it and get ready for BU on Saturday."
