WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Haley Wentzel paced the offense with a career-high five goals, while senior Allison LaBeau had seven points behind two goals and a career-high five assists, as the Lehigh women's lacrosse team never trailed in a 14-10 win at American on Saturday afternoon. With her seven points, LaBeau became just the fifth player in school history to eclipse 200 career points. The Mountain Hawks (7-2, 2-0 Patriot League) finished the afternoon with a dominant 40-23 edge in shots.
"I credit American with their toughness of not going away," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "I thought their fast break game was definitely a strength for them and we struggled a little bit to defend that, so that's an area we need to improve. We couldn't really pull away by a large margin. Although we had 40 shots, we didn't shoot very well on the day."
Wentzel's five goals gave her exactly 50 for her career. Freshman Autumn Ryan finished with a career-high two goals and three points while senior Julianne D'Orazio scored three goals for her third straight hat trick. D'Orazio also had four draw controls, three groundballs and a caused turnover. Sophomore Courtney Henig dished a career-high four assists.
"Alli is just so integral to our attacking game," said Redfern. "She has been for four years. We're happy for her to achieve such a milestone. Haley did what is Haley's strength, which is put the ball in the back of the cage."
Wentzel began the game with two straight goals, then after American pulled even at four, D'Orazio and Wentzel answered to give the Mountain Hawks a 6-4 halftime advantage.
The teams traded goals over the opening minutes of the second half until Lehigh used a 3-0 surge to create separation. The goals came from senior Lauren Beausoleil at 23:53, LaBeau at 22:43 and Wentzel at 22:31 to give the Mountain Hawks an 11-6 advantage. The Eagles couldn't pull any closer than three the rest of the way as LaBeau rounded out the scoring with 3:57 on the clock to wrap up the 14-10 win.
"It's great to win down here. The change of surface (to Astroturf) is a little bit of a challenge, and on the road after a Wednesday night game is a challenge. I credit our team for getting the win. It's an important one."
Along with Lehigh's dominant edge in shots, the Mountain Hawks held a 17-9 advantage in draw controls and groundballs were tied at 20. Senior Taylor Tvedt made nine saves, across from American's Fiona Geier, who tallied 14.
The Mountain Hawks return home on Wednesday to host Navy in a Patriot League showdown. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m.
