
Mountain Hawks return home to face Columbia Wednesday night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a four-game road trip which ended with three straight wins, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team comes home on Wednesday to face Columbia at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game will be broadcast live through the Patriot League Network. Wednesday will mark just the Mountain Hawks' second home game of the season, but they will play five of their last nine regular season contests at home. Lehigh enters with a 5-2 record following its Patriot League opening win at Holy Cross on Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks' only two losses of the season have come against nationally-ranked teams Penn State and Penn, who currently stand No. 10 and 11, respectively. Most recently, Lehigh defeated Richmond (9-7), VCU (16-6) and Holy Cross (10-3).
Holy Cross scored the first goal of Saturday's Patriot League opener with 15:08 remaining in the first half. However, the Mountain Hawks responded with a four-goal run, taking a 4-1 lead into halftime. The Crusaders opened the second-half strong, scoring within the first 30 seconds, but quickly lost momentum as the Mountain Hawks responded with six more goals throughout the half, eventually taking a 10-2 lead on their way to a 10-3 win. Lehigh's three goals allowed marked its fewest allowed vs. Holy Cross since 1994.
Six different players tallied goals for Lehigh, including senior Julianne D'Orazio who had three, marking her third-career hat trick and first of this season. D'Orazio led the team in goals (3), points (4), groundballs (6), caused turnovers (5) and draw controls (3). Fellow seniors Allison LaBeau and Lauren Beausoleil both scored two goals during the game. Through seven games, LaBeau leads the team in points with 26 while junior Haley Wentzel owns a team-leading 15 goals. Beausoleil leads in groundballs (21) and draw controls (15) while D'Orazio leads the team with 17 caused turnovers, which is good for 13th nationally (in caused turnovers per game). Lehigh's defense has been stellar, especially as of late, as the Mountain Hawks are fourth nationally in groundballs per game. Senior Taylor Tvedt stopped 18-of-24 shots sent her way last week to increase her save percentage to .509 for the season.
Columbia enters Wednesday boasting a 5-2 record, sporting wins over Fairfield (13-11), Canisius (12-11), Dartmouth (17-10), UC Davis (14-13) and most recently, San Diego State (14-11). The team's two losses came against Drexel (14-8), and Cornell (14-11). Victoria Kalamaras leads the team in points with 33 (11 goals, 22 assists). Taylor Quinn leads the team in goals (21), groundballs (23) and draw controls (22). Lindsey Ewertsen owns as team-leading 13 caused turnovers. Kelsey Gedin has played every minute in goal and has posted a 12.00 goals against average and .465 save percentage.
Columbia leads the all-time series with Lehigh, 7-4. The Mountain Hawks won the most recent meeting in 2009 by a 15-13 final. The teams first met in 1998, a 12-8 Lehigh victory. Wednesday will mark the third straight time Lehigh and Columbia will square off in Bethlehem.
After Wednesday's game, the Mountain Hawks travel to Washington, D.C. to take on American this Saturday for a 1 p.m. opening draw The team then returns home to Bethlehem to face Navy next Wednesday, Mar. 29 at 7 p.m.
