D’Orazio goal gives Lehigh thrilling 12-11 overtime win over Columbia

3/22/2017 10:53:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior Julianne D'Orazio finished a feed from sophomore Courtney Henig with 1:40 remaining in overtime to give the Lehigh women's lacrosse team a thrilling 12-11 overtime win over Columbia on Wednesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. A back-and-forth game saw Lehigh (6-2) score three times in the span of 1:02 to take an 11-9 lead, but Columbia netted the equalizer with 34 seconds left in regulation, setting the stage for D'Orazio's heroics. Lehigh senior goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt finished with seven saves, none bigger than two stops in overtime, including one on a point-blank opportunity.

"This was a great win against a really good Columbia team," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "It was a very well-played by both teams. It's exciting to come up with the win in overtime."

Senior Allison LaBeau led the offense with three goals and two assists, moving just three points from 200 in her career. D'Orazio's overtime winner was her third of the game, marking her second straight hat trick and fourth of her career. The reigning Patriot League Midfielder of the Week added five groundballs, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Henig posted a goal and career-high three assists to eclipse 50 points in her young career. Senior Lauren Beausoleil scored two second-half goals and added five groundballs; she also eclipsed 50 career caused turnovers in the win, finishing the game with four.

"Our seniors really polished off that game," said Redfern. "They've played so many minutes for us and they've been in close games. I think they're to the point now in their careers that they know how to close out a game. I'm thrilled that they could come up with the win."

Columbia began the game on a 2-0 run, but the Mountain Hawks responded with six of the next seven goals. Junior Haley Wentzel opened the scoring before goals from D'Orazio and freshman Sondra Dickey gave Lehigh a 3-2 lead with 19:05 remaining in the first half.

LaBeau ended the 6-1 run with consecutive goals to give the Mountain Hawks a 6-3 advantage with 8:43 on the first-half clock. However, Columbia scored three straight to end the half, including the final one with two seconds remaining, to even the score at six following 30 minutes of play.

Lehigh scored two quick goals in the second half, at 28:09 and 27:52, but the Lions came back with the next three and the Mountain Hawks struggled to beat Columbia goalkeeper Kelsey Gedin, who made seven of her 11 saves in the second. Beausoleil ended Lehigh's scoring drought and beat Gedin with 4:20 left in regulation to tie the score at nine, sparking a 3-0 Mountain Hawks' run. D'Orazio finished a feed from LaBeau just 48 seconds later than LaBeau scored on an unassisted goal just 14 seconds after that.

Columbia came back with goals at the 2:10 and 0:34 marks, sending the game to overtime. Tvedt made two big saves in the extra session to keep the Mountain Hawks alive, helping set up the offense for the game-winner.

Final shots were 32-22 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 26-17 edge in groundballs. Columbia finished with a 17-9 edge in draw controls.

"I think it's a sign of a strong team that when you make some mistakes, you can rally back," said Redfern. "They had resilience tonight. We're really proud of them."

Lehigh will return to Patriot League play this Saturday when it travels to American University to face the Eagles. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
