BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team will begin its season on Saturday with a strong test at No. 7 Penn State, who lost in the NCAA Tournament semifinals a year ago. The game is set to start at 3 p.m. in University Park, Pa., and will be the third year in a row Lehigh opens its season against the Nittany Lions. The Mountain Hawks finished last year with a 13-5 record overall and 6-3 mark in the Patriot League.
Last year, Lehigh lost to Penn State 13-6 after dropping a 15-7 final in its 2015 season opener. After last season's defeat, the Mountain Hawks went on to win their next 10 home games, a streak that's still active and a school record in the Patriot League era.
This year, Lehigh has the Preseason Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year in senior attacker Allison LaBeau, who led the league in points last year with 80 (46 goals, 34 assists). The Mountain Hawks return a strong group for this season and were projected to finish third in the Patriot League preseason poll. Seniors Lauren Beausoleil and Julianne D'Orazio, in addition to LaBeau, were named to the Preseason All-Patriot League team. The team lost four seniors from last year, including midfielder Kendall Garden, who finished last season fifth on the team in both goals (19) and points (24).
Penn State lost by just one goal in the national semifinals last year to North Carolina, the eventual winner. After getting upset in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament last year as the No. 2 seed, the Nittany Lions entered the NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid, defeating Winthrop, No. 2 seed Florida and No. 7 seed Penn before falling in the semifinals. Penn State returns three of its top five point scorers from a year ago, including senior attacker Steph Lazo (34 goals, 37 assists in 2016), sophomore attacker/midfielder Madison Carter (48 goals, four assists) and junior midfielder Katie O'Donnell (46 goals, four assists).
Lehigh has yet to defeat Penn State in program history after squaring off every year from 1985-2001, 2009-2013 and 2015-2016. Overall, Penn State is 24-0 against Lehigh.
Following Saturday's game, Lehigh will travel to take on Iona on Feb. 25 before its home opener against Wagner on Saturday, Mar. 4 at 1 p.m.
