Lehigh Swimmers Lower Two School Records on Day One of Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks wrapped up day one at the 2017 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships at Becknell University on Wednesday with a pair of school records in the men's and women's 800 freestyle relays.
 
The women's 800 freestyle relay team closed out the night by scoring big points by picking up a second place finish. Junior Julianne Koch, senior Kelly Carroll, sophomore Courtney Ferreira and junior Meghan Thompson combined to post a time of 7:17.41, which lowered the old school record time of 7:18.53 set at last year's Patriot League Championships. The Mountain Hawks finished behind last year's winner, Navy, who posted a winning time of 7:11.29.
 
The men also closed out the night in record-setting fashion with a fourth place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. Senior Jacob Moyar, junior Zach Tieke, freshman Walker Wilson and senior Justin White combined to post a new school record mark of 6:37.70, which lowered the old record time of 6:38.28 set at last season's championship meet. Army West Point claimed the title this season with a winning time of 6:31.41.
 
Earlier in the evening, the Mountain Hawks recorded strong times in the 200 medley relays as the men and women both placed fifth in their respected events. Navy won the women's event with a time of 1:40. 59 and Army won on the men's side with a time of 1:27.97.
 
Freshman Nicole Shek, sophomore Allison Morel, freshman Audra Smires and senior Kaitlyn Ruffing combined for a time of 1:44.32, which is the team's fastest time in the 200 medley relay this season and just over the school record mark of 1:43.53. For the men, junior Dean Shafritz, freshman Tyler Christ, Jimmy Davey, and senior Jamal Willis combined for a season-best mark of 1:30.90 in the 200 medley relay, narrowly missing the school record mark of 1:30.86.
 
The evening's events also included the women's three-meter diving finals. Sophomore Rayna Smilowitz represented Lehigh in the finals and placed 14th with a score of 213.20 to earn team points for the Brown and White. Top-seeded Kyra Tatlow of Boston University won the event with a finals score of 295.20 to hit the NCAA A-cut qualifying standard.
 
At the conclusion of day one, the men are in fourth place with 58 points and the women are in fifth place with 65 points. The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Thursday for the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, men's one-meter diving and 400 medley relay. Preliminary events begin at 10 a.m. and finals start at 6 p.m.
