BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will close out its fall season this weekend when the Mountain Hawks host the two-day, 36-hole Lehigh Invitational beginning Friday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The Mountain Hawks have enjoyed a solid fall on the tournament circuit and will be looking to bounce back from a loss to Lafayette in match play Tuesday in the annual President's Cup matches.
Â
Lehigh will be one of four Patriot League schools in the field as the Mountain Hawks will also host this year's Patriot League Championship April 28-29, 2018.
Â
Saucon Valley Country Club, founded in 1920, has grown from 18 holes and a clubhouse to become one of the largest private clubs in North America. It encompasses 800 acres and consists of four courses, including the Weyhill Course, Old Course, Grace Course and Short Course. The Grace Course opened with nine holes in the fall of 1953 with the second nine opened for play in 1958. Named for Eugene Gifford Grace (Lehigh Class of 1899), longtime president and chairman of Bethlehem Steel, the Grace Course measures 7,051 yards from the championship tees and features greens nearly twice the size of those on the Old Course but without the severe contours.
Â
Lehigh has placed well in all three previous fall tournaments, highlighted by a runner-up performance at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational, where the Mountain Hawks lost the team title on a tiebreaker.
Â
In its last tournament action, the Mountain Hawks used a strong final day to finish sixth in the Connecticut Cup, hosted by UConn. Sophomore Owen Quinn led the Mountain Hawks by tying for ninth. He is expected to be joined in Lehigh's lineup by senior Billy Johns, juniors Johnny Hsu and Lee Hammerschmidt and sophomore Ryan Kelly. Junior Max Redetzke and sophomores Joe Ender and Chris Pollan completed Lehigh's eight-man entry in the President's Cup and are expected to compete as individuals along with freshman Zack Warren.
Â
Along with Lehigh, the 12-team field will feature Bucknell, Colgate, Fairfield, Fordham, Hofstra, Iona, Lafayette, Monmouth, Rider, Siena and St. John's. The Mountain Hawks and Bison tied for the team title last year with Bucknell prevailing in a playoff. Fordham's Joseph Trim was the individual medalist and returns this year. Hsu was Lehigh's top finisher last year, finishing in third place at two over par 146.
The Lehigh Invitational will tee off Friday at 9:30 a.m. with the first 18 holes from the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The tournament will conclude on Saturday with the final 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m. Lehigh's five-player scoring team will be playing in the first five groups off of hole No. 1 on Friday. The Mountain Hawks will play with Rider and Bucknell.
