GLADSTONE, N.J. – All good things must come to an end. Even Lehigh's early school-year winning streak over rival Lafayette. The Mountain Hawks had won the first six head-to-head competitions versus the Leopards but Lafayette claimed its first win on the golf course, topping Lehigh 9.5-6.5 to reclaim the President's Cup Tuesday at Hamilton Farms Golf Club.
Lafayette built a 5-3 morning lead and won four of the eight singles matches in the afternoon to win the Ryder Cup-style event for the first time since 2015. The Leopards now own a 4-3 lead in the match play series dating back to 2011.
In the opening nine of the day, Lehigh's first group won the first point of better ball play as juniors Lee Hammerschmidt and Max Redetzke defeated Pat McGinley and James Frahm. Lafayette won the next three matches to take an early 3-1 lead. The teams split the back nine alternate shot matches, with sophomores Owen Quinn and Ryan Kelly defeating Creighton Hendrix and Brendan Cronin and senior Billy Johns and junior Johnny Hsu besting Trey Croney and Cole Berger.
Lafayette led 5-3 after the morning 18. Needing 3.5 points to win the cup, the Leopards earned four wins and a half point through the first six singles matches. Sophomore Chris Pollan beat Aiden McDermodt for Lehigh's first singles win, while Redetzke and Frahm halved their match. After Hendrix beat Quinn to get Lafayette to 8.5 points, Lehigh won the final two matches with Johns and Hsu securing singles victories.
So far in 2017-18 Lehigh had beaten Lafayette in men's and women's cross country, volleyball, field hockey and men's and women's soccer. Dating back to last season, Lehigh had won 16 consecutive head-to-head competitions against Lafayette.
In men's golf, Lehigh and Lafayette have played in the same tournament three times so far, with the Mountain Hawks posting the higher team finish each time.
Both teams will compete again (with others) when the Mountain Hawks host the Lehigh Invitational, Saturday and Sunday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
