Seniors Shine in Final Meet Win Over Drexel

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh swimming and diving team closed out the regular season slate with a 166-122 victory over a quality Drexel squad. The Mountain Hawks totaled an impressive 10 individual wins on the day with one relay victory and set two pool records. In total, five pool records fell on the day as the Drexel women contributed to the other three.

On a day which Lehigh celebrated and honored its seniors, Kelly Carroll and Kaitlyn Ruffing each captured multiple victories and Ruffing set a new pool record in the process.

Meghan Thompson picked up the first Lehigh win of the day as she won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:15.75. Her time is the fastest time this season for the Mountain Hawks and came 0.01 seconds shy of the pool record mark. Senior Cora Summerfield placed fourth in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:34.27.

Julianne Koch made it back-to-back wins for Lehigh to start the individual events as she claimed the top spot in the 200 freestyle with a winning time of 1:53.72.

Lehigh took the top two spots in the 200 butterfly with Sydney Bornstein setting the winning pace with a time of 2:04.69. Senior Kelly Carroll picked up a second place finish with a time of 2:05.34 and senior Valeri Lauer came in fifth.

Swimming in her final meet in Jacobs Pool, Ruffing put herself in the top spot of the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.67. Freshmen Payton Miles and Audra Smires placed third and fourth, respectfully.

Ruffing would later break her own pool record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.99 to surpass the old record time of 51.32. Ruffing's winning time today is also the fastest by a Lehigh woman this season and is just 0.7 seconds off her own school record pace.

In the one-meter diving competition, Rayna Smilowitz took first place and recorded her best score of the season with a mark of 242.32.

Thompson posted her second win of the day as she touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 5:03.78. Tori Connolly placed third and Summerfield captured fourth.

Carroll became the second senior woman to capture a win on Senior Day as she posted a winning time of 56.98 in the 100 butterfly.

Smilowitz completed the sweep of the diving competition as she posted the winning score of 230.47 in the three-meter dive.

Carroll found win No. 2 on the day in the 200 IM as she posted the winning time of 2:08.08. Courtney Ferreira gave Lehigh more big points in the event as she placed second with a time of 2:09.71.

The Mountain Hawks ended the day in record-setting fashion by setting the new pool record in the 200 freestyle relay. Koch, Miles, Smires and Ruffing teamed up for the winning and record time of 1:35.77, lowering the old time of 1:37.08.

Lehigh will take some to train and prepare for its next competition which will be the Patriot League Championships. Bucknell University will host the event on February 15-18.
