BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team battled to earn the doubles point before winning five of six singles matches in a 6-1 win over Villanova Wednesday afternoon in the Mountain Hawks' first outdoor spring action on the newly-renovated Ulrich Varsity Courts. Lehigh improves to an impressive 9-1 on the season with the win, while Villanova falls to 4-7.

"I loved how we kept our composure despite not having practiced outdoors much," said Howard Talmud '77 Head Coach Wouter Hendrix. "Our guys showed a lot of maturity and toughness. Kochman beat a very special player in Seitz, and Prince was clutch in the doubles.

"Despite being 9-1 I feel like we have a lot of room for growth," continued Hendrix. "It is such a big privilege to be able to win our first official dual match on the new Ulrich courts against a strong Villanova team."

Villanova duo of Chris Seitz and Matt Phelps opened doubles play with a 6-1 win over junior Ethan Bogard and freshman George Cooper at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Bryant Born and sophomore Jack Petersen battled for a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles, before seniors Jeremy Kochman and Ricardo Prince fought to a big 7-6 (2) win at the top flight to secure the doubles point for Lehigh.

The Wildcats evened the match at 1-1 as Luis Miranda defeated Born 6-0, 6-0, but it was all Lehigh from there as the Mountain Hawks won the next five singles matches. Petersen put Lehigh ahead 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, before Cooper earned a 7-5, 6-1 win at the fourth flight. Bogard then clinched the match for Lehigh at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alastair Hurry.

Kochman was able to pull out a huge 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win over Seitz at the top flight of singles. Junior Colin Nardella secured the 6-1 Lehigh win with a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-3 win over Matt Phelps at No. 5 singles.

The Mountain Hawks will now have an 11-day layoff from match action as the team prepares to open Patriot League play on March 20 against Loyola.
