Lehigh Wins Third Meet in a Row with Victory at Loyola

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team picked up its third win in a row on Saturday afternoon with a 169-125 victory at Loyola. The Mountain Hawks earned victories in 10 events, including two from Kaitlyn Ruffing and Sydney Bornstein, plus one each from Julianne Koch, Nicole Shek, Sydney Bornstein, Meghan Thompson, Kelly Carroll, the 200 medley relay team and the 400 freestyle relay team. Lehigh now sits at 3-1 (1-1 Patriot) on the season.
Lehigh was strong throughout the freestyle events, winning four of the five, including sweeping the podium in three of them. The 50 yard free saw Ruffing (23.77), Audra Smires (24.52) and Amanda Zlotnikoff (24.63) take the top three spots in order, with Ruffing also leading the way in the 100 free, followed by Payton Miles and Smires.
The Mountain Hawks also held a grip on the 200 yard free, with Koch (1:53.32), Thompson (1:54.40) and Courtney Ferreira (1:56.45) pacing the field in order. Lehigh then took the top two spots in the 500 free with Thompson (5:08.27) winning the race and Thomson (5:11.03) coming in second.
Cora Summerfield (10:40.34) captured runner-up in the 1,000 yard freestyle, just ahead of Thomson who finished in third place with her time of 10:41.41.
Bornstein and Carroll tied for first atop the field in the 100 yard butterfly with their time of 57.97 seconds. The same duo took the top two spots in the 200 fly as well, with Bornstein (2:05.42) winning the event and Carroll (2:07.07) taking second.
Lehigh grabbed a pair of victories in relay events, including the 200 medley relay team of Shek, Loeva Palu-Benson, Carroll and Ruffing (1:48.44), as well as the 400 freestyle relay team of Koch, Miles, Smires and Ruffing (3:32.45).
Ferreira led the way for Lehigh with a second place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:11.61). Thompson finished right behind in third place with a 2:12.88 tally.
Shek was the top finisher in the 100 yard backstroke (59.32), while Koch was the runner-up in the 200 yard backstroke event (2:07.46). Allison Morel was the top Lehigh finisher in the 200 yard breast with her third place finish of 2:28.95.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool next Friday and Saturday in New Jersey at the Princeton Invitational.
