History of the Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry
EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team swept Lafayette on Friday night in the annual dual meet between the two schools at Weinstein Natatorium. The Mountain Hawks won all 14 events at the meet to outscore Lafayette 219-43. The 219 points are the third-most ever scored by the team in dual meet in the 99-season history of the program and the most since they scored 220 against Navy in the 2005-06 season. All told, the Mountain Hawks set six new pool records and one school record at the meet to earn their ninth straight win over Lafayette.
Seven new pool records fell at the meet including the 200 medley relay from Nicole Shek, Loeva Palu-Benson, Kelly Carroll and Kaitlyn Ruffing (1:47.14), Julianne Koch in the 200 freestyle (1:49.91), Meghan Thompson in the 500 freestyle (4:57.60), Rachel Rider in the 100 backstroke (57.53), Kelly Carroll in the 100 butterfly (56.28) and the 400 free relay quartet of Ruffing, Payton Miles, Thompson and Koch (3:26.21). The final pool record went to sophomore Courtney Ferreira, who also broke her own school record from last year's dual meet in the 100 IM (58.59).
Miles led the way in the 50 yard freestyle (23.27), while Koch collected one of her three wins on the night in the 100 free (51.07). Cora Summerfield outpaced the group in the 1,000 yard free (10:16.32), while Allison Morel took gold in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes.
Rider touched the wall first in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.84, with Carroll collected another win in the 200 fly (2:02.01).
Up next, the Mountain Hawks will be sending several swimmers to the AT&T U.S. Winter Nationals in Atlanta from Nov. 30 - Dec 2. The team's next dual meet will come on January 6 at Army West Point.
