The Rivalry: Lehigh vs. Lafayette
GLADSTONE, N.J. – Lehigh and Lafayette played their annual President's Cup matches Tuesday at Hamilton Farms Golf Club. After a two-year hiatus, the Mountain Hawks regained control of the cup, downing the Leopards by a 9-7 score.
Â
The day-long event featured a Ryder Cup-style match play format. The rivals were tied 4-4 following the morning better ball and alternate shot matches, but Lehigh won five of eight singles matches to defeat Lafayette by the same score that the Mountain Hawks fell by a season ago.
Â
Freshmen Owen Quinn and Ryan Kelly led the way for the Mountain Hawks, teaming to go 2-0 in the morning doubles matches before winning their respective singles matches. The duo bested Reid Bedell and Patrick McGinley 3 and 2 in best ball play and then 3 and 1 in alternate shot. In the afternoon, Quinn defeated Bedell 3 and 2 while Kelly won convincingly over McGinley 6 and 4.
Â
The team of sophomore Max Redetzke and freshman Joe Ender won Lehigh's other match in best ball, defeating Ben Perrine and Aiden McDermott 3 and 2. The team of junior Billy Johns and sophomore Johnny Hsu claimed Lehigh's other victory in alternate shot play, with a 2 up victory over James Frahm and Will Halamandaris.
Â
In singles play the Mountain Hawks claimed four of the first five matches to go up 8-5. In addition to wins from Quinn and Kelly, sophomore Lee Hammerschmidt beat Drew Petri 1 up and Ender downed McDermott 3 and 1.
Â
In the final match, Hsu topped Halamandaris 2 and 1 to give the Mountain Hawks the 9-7 victory.
Â
Lehigh claimed the inaugural President's Cup in 2011 and won it a second time in 2013, while Lafayette won the cup in 2012 and 2014 and retained it last year.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will close out their fall season when they host the Lehigh Invitational, Friday and Saturday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
