BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Andy Coen has named Andy Marino the Mountain Hawks' offensive line coach. Marino coached Lehigh's tight ends in his first season on staff. He replaces longtime assistant Brett Sawyer, who has left the coaching profession for a position in the private sector.
Sawyer came to Lehigh with Coen in 2006 and in addition to his offensive line responsibilities, served as the Mountain Hawks' recruiting coordinator. He traded his recruiting coordinator title for the added responsibility as run game coordinator in the 2014 season.
"Brett had a wonderful opportunity presented to him in the private sector, and it was one that he believed he needed to pursue," Coen said. "Brett spoke to me about this opportunity and I gave him my blessing. He is an outstanding coach and also did a very good job as a recruiter. Brett was a big part of the offensive success we have had over the past nine season. I will miss Brett and I wish him nothing but the best as he pursues his new career."
In his first season at Lehigh, Marino worked with the tight ends, led by Tyler Coyle, who caught 17 passes in his senior season and graduated with 48 career catches and seven touchdowns. Senior Chris Ruhl and sophomores Mike Baur and Drew Paulsen return at the tight end position.
"With Brett's departure, I wanted to move quickly so that as an offensive staff we would maintain continuity," Coen said. "Andy Marino is an outstanding young coach and has been doing a great a great job coaching our tight ends. With this move I will be taking more of a role in the offense. Coach Marino will coach the centers and guards and I will work with the tight ends and tackles. Our offseason program is in full swing and I am looking forward to kicking off the new season when we report to camp on August 5."
Marino came to Lehigh from Widener University where he spent the 2013 season working with the offensive line. He also held titles of Assistant Head Coach, Recruiting Coordinator and Run Game Coordinator. He mentored one All-Conference lineman while his offensive line paved the way for the conference's top scoring offense.
Prior to his stint at Widener, Marino spent three years on the coaching staff at Delaware where he spent two seasons as an offensive graduate assistant before working with the tight ends and tackles in 2012. In his first season at Delaware, the Blue Hens reached the FCS National Championship game. Marino also worked with Blue Hen center Gino Gradkowski, who played for the Baltimore Ravens and recently signed with the Denver Broncos.
A 2009 graduate of Lycoming College with a degree in History, Marino was a three-year starter and a two-year team captain on the offensive line. In 2008 he was a MAC Champion in the NCAA Division III National Playoff Qualifier. He added a Master's in Higher Education Administration from Delaware in 2012.
A search is currently underway to fill the vacant assistant position on Lehigh's staff.
