BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the third consecutive season Lehigh's Mitchell Petersen has been named to the Academic All-Patriot League men's tennis team, it was announced Monday. A graduating senior, Petersen was a leader on the courts for the Mountain Hawks in the recently completed 2015 season and has consistently been Lehigh's top performer in the classroom as well.
The Academic All-Patriot League teams are voted on by the league's sports information directors, who are not permitted to vote to their student-athletes. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter of key contributor in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for the honor.
Petersen owns a 3.68 GPA as a finance major. He was voted to the Academic All-Patriot League team for the third straight season. Petersen is a five-time Dean's List member and a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
On the court, the Grand Rapids, Michigan product earned second team All-Patriot League honors in each of his first two seasons. Petersen was one of Lehigh's most reliable single players in 2015 as he led the Mountain Hawks with a 15-7 singles record, including an 11-4 mark playing at the No. 4 flight. He was a perfect 7-0 against Patriot League opponents in singles with six regular season wins and a win in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament.
Petersen also went 9-12 in doubles, playing primarily at the No. 2 flight alongside sophomore Ethan Bogard. He finished his career with a 55-26 singles record and a 40-37 doubles mark. Petersen will graduate second in school history in career singles victories.
Six student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Patriot League team, matching the size of the All-Patriot League first team. Army's Alex Van Velzer was voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's tennis for the second consecutive season.
