Mountain Hawks drop doubleheader at Ivy League Champs

5/23/2015 7:12:00 PM | Baseball

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lehigh baseball team fell victim to the hot-hitting bats of Ivy League Champion Columbia Saturday afternoon in a battle between the Ivy and Patriot League Champions. The Lions were able to walk away with a 14-3 win in the opener before claiming the nightcap 8-3.

"We played an outstanding team today," said head coach Sean Leary. "They're a deserving champion of the Ivy League and they capitalized on every mistake we made. We wanted to stay sharp heading into Regionals and I know that team will help us prepare for what we'll see next Friday."

Sophomore Patrick Donnelly led Lehigh for the day with a 5-for-7 showing at the plate and two runs scored. Sophomores Connor Donovan, John Scarr and junior Mike Garzillo also recorded multiple hits on the day.

Columbia was able to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first inning, but Lehigh junior starter Kevin Long got a double play before fanning a Lion to limit the damage as Columbia took a 1-0 lead through one.

Lehigh wasn't able to get anything off Columbia starter George Thanopoulos until senior Justin Pacchioli led off the fourth frame with a base on balls. He stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch before a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Jacen Nalesnik tied the game at one.

The Lions grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the inning when Columbia sent ten batters to the plate and scored six runs to take a 7-1 lead. A double to right field off the bat of Donnelly opened the top of the seventh before a catcher's interference was called with junior Mackey Price up to bat and senior Patrick Walshe was hit by a pitch. Senior Connor Faust followed with an RBI fielder's choice to add a Lehigh run. Lehigh added another run in the eighth on an RBI from junior Mackey Price, but the Columbia bats put up two more crooked numbers and led the Lions to a 14-3 win in the opener.

Game two senior starter Nick Stephens kept the Lions hitless for the first two innings of the nightcap until Columbia put up a five spot in the third inning. The Lions tallied three more runs in the fifth before Lehigh was able to get on the board in the seventh. Donnelly smacked a leadoff double to open the frame before Donovan followed with a one-out double to left to plate Lehigh's first run. Scarr then knocked an infield single and a throwing error allowed Donovan to run home and score Lehigh's second run.

Junior reliever Kevin Boswick kept the Lions off the board for the final 2.2 innings while allowing just one hit. Lehigh put together a late rally and was able to score one more run in the top of the ninth inning when Scarr, Bleming and Price recorded three-straight hits and a Nalesnik groundout made the score 8-3.

The Patriot League Champion Mountain Hawks will learn their NCAA Regionals destination during the Selection Show Monday. Regionals will be held May 29-June 1.
