BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team enters the postseason having won four of its last five matches. The Mountain Hawks will look to build on a strong regular season when they open the Patriot League Tournament against Loyola Friday at the Turning Stone Sportsplex in Verona, N.Y.
Â
Lehigh earned the No. 4 seed thanks to an 11-8 overall record and a 4-3 league mark. The Mountain Hawks tied Loyola at 4-3 in the league but were awarded the higher seed based on a 6-1 victory over the Greyhounds in Baltimore on April 15.
Â
In its regular season finale, Lehigh topped Lafayette 5-1 on Monday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks won the doubles point and took four of the top five singles flights to beat their arch rivals for the 14th consecutive time. Lehigh's string of four wins in its final five matches included Patriot League wins over Colgate, Bucknell, Loyola and Lafayette while the lone loss during that period came against Army.
Â
Lehigh will be looking to advance to the Patriot League semifinals for the first time since 2009 when the Mountain Hawks square off with Loyola in Friday's second quarterfinal, set for noon.
Â
Freshmen have come in and made an immediate impact for the Mountain Hawks this season. At the top of the lineup, Christina Auyeung owns a team-best 13-4 singles record at the No. 1 flight and is 10-5 at No. 1 doubles playing alongside sophomore Jamie Campisi. Briana Maravich and Kirstin Godau also have 12 singles wins with Maravich seeing significant action at No. 4 singles and Godau playing No. 5.
Â
Campisi is also having a strong year with ten singles victories. She will play at the No. 3 flight. The rest of Lehigh's projected lineup features sophomore Cassidy Cruz at No. 2 singles and senior captain Abby Farrell at No. 6. Cruz and Farrell are expected to play together at No. 2 doubles, while Godau should team with freshman Abby Duddy at the No. 3 flight.
Â
Loyola comes in at 10-7 overall. The Greyhounds have not played a competitive match since their loss to Lehigh. Loyola beat Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Bucknell with its three league losses coming to Army, Navy and Lehigh.
Â
The Patriot League quarterfinals begin Friday at 9 a.m. when top seed Navy meets the winner of Thursday's first round match between Lafayette and Holy Cross. The Lehigh-Loyola match at noon will be followed by No. 2 Boston University against No. 7 Bucknell at 3 p.m. and No. 3 Army West Point against No. 6 Colgate.
Â
The semifinals are set for Saturday. Should Lehigh defeat Loyola the Mountain Hawks would play in the 10 a.m. semifinal against Navy, Lafayette or Holy Cross. Sunday's championship match will begin at noon.
