VERONA, N.Y. – For the first time since 2009, the Lehigh women's tennis team has advanced to the Patriot League semifinals as the Mountain Hawks opened the 2015 Patriot League Tournament with a 4-0 quarterfinal win over Loyola Friday at the Turning Stone Sportsplex. The No.4 seed, Lehigh dropped just two games in taking the top two doubles flights, then won three singles matches in straight sets to close out the match against the fifth-seed Greyhounds.
With the win, Lehigh improves to 12-8 on the season. The Mountain Hawks will face top seed Navy in Saturday's first semifinal, beginning at 10 a.m.
"We brought our A game today in both doubles and singles," Lehigh head coach Wouter Hendrix. "Beating a quality team like Loyola and picking up our first tournament win in a long time is tremendous."
In doubles play, sophomore Cassidy Cruz and senior Abby Farrell got things rolling with an 8-0 win over Megan Hahn and Olivia Ott at the No. 2 flights. Lehigh clinched the doubles point at the top flight as freshman Christina Auyeung and sophomore Jamie Campisi won 8-2 over Amanda Lanciano and Ania Krawiec.
Auyeung extended Lehigh's lead in singles play with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Hahn at the top flight.
"Farrell and Cruz gave us a massive momentum boost with their 8-0 win," Hendrix said. "Campisi and Auyeung clinched the doubles and then Christina proceeded to play her best match of the year."
Freshman Briana Maravich gave the Mountain Hawks a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Haleigh Morgus at No. 4 singles. Maravich bounced back after being forced to retire with an injury in Lehigh's 5-1 win over Lafayette on Monday.
Cruz clinched Lehigh's first tournament win in six years, avenging a loss to Lanciano nine days ago in Baltimore with a 6-4, 6-2 win. When the match was clinched, Campisi was up a set at No. 3 singles, while freshman Kirstin Godau was up 3-0 in the first set of her match.
"Cruz made up for her loss at Loyola by playing extremely intelligent and high quality tennis and clinched the match for us," Hendrix said. "As a team we played terrific tennis. This is a big win for our program and I am proud of our women. They represent our university with class and are a tenacious and focused unit."
Lehigh's last Patriot League Tournament win came six years ago to the day, a 4-0 win over rival Lafayette on April 24, 2009 in Lewisburg, Pa.
The Mountain Hawks will now face a Navy team that defeated Lehigh 5-2 in its Patriot League opener on March 29. Lehigh won the doubles point, while Auyeung added a win at No. 1 singles for the Mountain Hawks' other point.
Saturday's semifinal will begin at 10 a.m. from the Turning Stone Sportsplex.
