WEST POINT, N.Y. – This past weekend, Maggie Forkner and Alina Shyani competed at the Patriot League Masters Tournament. The duo competed together in doubles while also participating in individual singles play.
In singles play, Forkner won three consecutive matches to reach the championship match. She opened with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Hanna Ganchi of Lafayette in the round of 16 before defeating Grace Li of Navy 7-6, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Forkner earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Gabriella Mikaul of Boston University to advance to the final, where she fell to Emily Ruckno of Army.
Shyani won two matches before falling in the quarterfinals. She opened with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Isabella Osdidar of Loyola Maryland in the round of 32 before rallying to defeat Patricia Acra of Holy Cross 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 16.
In doubles play, Forkner and Shyani defeated Holy Cross' Phoebe Devine and Patricia Acra 9-7 in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals.
"I am so proud of how Maggie and Alina represented Lehigh this weekend," said head coach Sophia Geier. "Credit to the Army player for a great performance in the singles final, but Maggie should be proud of the tournament she put together and the level of tennis she played throughout the weekend. Alina also had a great run, winning her first two rounds, and reaching the doubles semifinals was another great accomplishment for our program. Both represented Lehigh with a lot of fight and competitiveness, and I'm proud of the way they competed and carried themselves throughout the tournament."
