The Rivalry: Lehigh vs. Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team closed out the regular season with an impressive 7-0 victory over Lafayette Monday on the Ulrich Varsity Courts. It took until the final match of the regular season for the Mountain Hawks to play outdoors at home but Lehigh won two of three doubles matches and swept the six singles matches to improve to 12-9 overall and 3-3 in the Patriot League.

Lehigh has now won seven straight matches against Lafayette in men's tennis.

"Our doubles wasn't where I wanted it to be but credit to Lafayette as they played really well," Lehigh head coach Wouter Hendrix said. "They made things very competitive. I knew it would be tough early on because of the wind and the fact that we haven't played outside much. I'm glad we pulled it out. Our guys were really tough today and it seems like we're hitting our stride here in the last part of the season."

Seniors Ben Gilman and Mitchell Petersen were both winners in singles and doubles in their final home matches in the Brown and White. Gilman teamed with junior Jeremy Kochman to defeat Brandon Goldstein and Brian Stefanowicz 8-2 at the top doubles flight. Gilman then beat Goldstein 6-1, 6-1 in singles to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead in the match. The singles victory marked Gilman's 100th career win at Lehigh, combining singles and doubles. He now has 49 career singles wins and 51 doubles wins for the Mountain Hawks.

Petersen and sophomore Ethan Bogard beat Brian Pinkard and Jake Lazer 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. The senior then clinched the match and improved to 6-0 in Patriot League singles matches with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Stefanowicz at No. 4 singles.

"What a way for those two guys to finish up at home," Hendrix said. "I told them both that I owe them so much gratitude for everything they've done for the team. Without them we don't win a championship in 2013. Their character has been really good for us and has set the tone for our program. I'm fortunate that I can be linked to those guys."

Lafayette's lone win of the day came at No. 3 doubles but Lehigh won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, with no Mountain Hawk player dropping more than three games in those matches.

The closest match was at No. 3 singles where freshman Jack Petersen grinded out a tough 7-5 first set win over Pinkard but Pinkard retired due to an injury prior to the start of the second set.

Kochman posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lazer at No. 2 singles while Bogard and sophomore Colin Nardella won by identical 6-3, 6-0 scores at the bottom two flights.

The Mountain Hawks will likely be the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament and will face either Boston University or Navy in a quarterfinal match on Friday in Lewisburg, Pa. Seeds and match times for the tournament are expected to be announced on Tuesday.
