
Lehigh drops 4-3 heartbreaker to Boston U. in Patriot League quarterfinals

LEWISBURG, Pa. – In a tightly contested match that came down to a third set in a three-plus hour match at No. 1 singles, the Lehigh men's tennis team saw its season come to an end in heartbreaking faction with a 4-3 loss to Boston University in the Patriot League quarterfinals. The third-seeded Terriers won the doubles point and the bottom two singles flights before capturing the decisive match to thwart the comeback attempt from the No. 6 seed Mountain Hawks.
The loss ends Lehigh's season at 12-10 and snaps a streak of five consecutive Patriot League semifinal appearances for the Mountain Hawks.
The Terriers captured the doubles point with the wins at the bottom two flights and had a small lead at the top flight when doubles was clinched. At the No. 2 flight Mario Sandoval and Stefan Lemire won 8-2 over senior Mitchell Petersen and sophomore Ethan Bogard. Boston University clinched doubles with an 8-5 win from Jake Devries and Jay Leelanavich over sophomore Graham Lehman and freshmen Jack Petersen.
Mitchell Petersen posted his team leading 15th singles win and improved to 7-0 against Patriot League opponents with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sandoval at the No. 4 flight. The Terriers got straight set wins from Lucas Bombonatti over Bogard at No. 5 singles and DeVries over sophomore Tyler Hansen at No. 6.
Jack Petersen brought Lehigh within 3-2 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Lemire at No. 3 singles.
Lehigh pulled even at 3-3 as junior Jeremy Kochman held off Leelanavich in three sets, 7-5, 0-6, 7-5.
The match came down to No. 1 singles where senior Ben Gilman took on Will Kwok in a marathon that eclipsed the three hour mark. Kwok took the first set 7-5 but Gilman answered with a 6-4 win in the second. Leading 5-4, Kwok won the final game to take the deciding set 6-4 and end Lehigh's season.
The Mountain Hawks lose two key seniors in Gilman and Mitchell Petersen who both own 50 or more career singles wins and were key contributors to Lehigh's 2013 Patriot League Championship team.
