Lehigh falls to St. Bonaventure at Snowbird Classic

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - St. Bonaventure scored nine runs in the third and fourth innings to help capture a 12-2 win over the Lehigh baseball team Monday morning in the second game of a three-game set between the Bonnies and the Mountain Hawks at the Snowbird Classic. Lehigh falls to 3-4 with the loss while the Bonnies improve to 4-2 on the young season.

"We had a tough day all around today, but I am confident this group we will bounce back tomorrow," said head coach Sean Leary. "This team believes in each other and in our process. They will be excited to get back to the diamond tomorrow to compete for each other."

The Bonnies, the designated home team, got on the board right away after Cole Peterson and Thad Johnson led off the first inning with back-to-back singles. An RBI single from Tyler Bell scored St. Bonaventure's first run before an RBI fielder's choice followed to give the Bonnies an early 2-0 lead through one.

Lehigh starter senior Nick Stephens sat St. Bonaventure down in order in the second before Lehigh was able to get a run back in the third. Senior Patrick Walshe reached base on an error to lead off the inning before advancing to second on a single from classmate Justin Pacchioli and then taking third following a Jacen Nalesnik fielder's choice. Junior Mike Garzillo followed with a single to score Walshe and cut the Bonnies lead to 2-1 after the top of the third.

St. Bonaventure answered right back with a six spot in the bottom half of the inning thanks to RBIs from four different players. Sophomore Matt Kozemchak came on in relief of Stephens during the frame and didn't allow a hit, but two errors helped the Bonnies plate their six runs to grab an 8-1 lead through three.

The Bonnies added three more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth inning and Lehigh wasn't able to get anything else going against St. Bonaventure starter Connor Grey until an RBI double off the bat of junior Anthony Rinaldi scored freshman Ryan Bonshak for Lehigh's second run of the day in the eighth inning. Freshman Mark Washington made his collegiate debut on the mound and fired the final three innings of the game for the Mountain Hawks only allowing one run on four hits, but the Lehigh bats weren't able to stage a comeback as St. Bonaventure captured the 12-2 win.

Garzillo led Lehigh offensively with a 2-for-2 showing at the plate and one RBI. Stephens suffered the loss after finishing with a line of eight runs, only four of which were earned, on six hits in two innings of work. Kozemchak allowed one earned run on two hits in three innings. Grey earned the win for the Bonnies after throwing 7.2 innings and giving up two runs on four hits.

The Mountain Hawks and Bonnies wrap up their three-game series Tuesday at 10 a.m.
