BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team will play its final non-league weekend series before the start of Patriot League play this weekend when the Mountain Hawks travel to Fairleigh Dickinson for a four-game set Saturday and Sunday. Doubleheaders will be played both days with first pitches set for 1 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday from the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex in Teaneck, N.J.
Lehigh will be looking to bounce back from an 11-10 loss at Delaware Tuesday. The Mountain Hawks and Blue Hens found themselves in a back-and-forth battle that saw the lead change hands four times, but an RBI walk in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winner for Delaware. Junior Mike Garzillo led Lehigh offensively with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate that included a home run, a double and four RBI. Freshman James Bleming knocked in three runs on two hits. Lehigh carries a 3-10 overall record into this weekend's series.
Garzillo leads the team and the Patriot League with a .453 batting average. The mark also ranks tenth-best in all of Division I. The second baseman has also recorded a team-best 16 RBI. Senior Justin Pacchioli follows with a .378 batting average and squad-high 15 runs scored and eight stolen bases. Pacchioli's on-base percentage of .563 leads the league and sits sixth in the nation. Sophomore David Young (.273) and junior Anthony Rinaldi (.250) have also been key offensive pieces for Lehigh. Senior J.R. Edwards leads the team with a 1.74 ERA. Classmate Nick Macaione has thrown a team-high 19.1 innings so far this season and accumulated a 2.79 ERA.
Fairleigh Dickinson holds a 4-6 overall record and is 2-2 on its home field. The Knights have won their last two games, including a 6-5 decision over Saint Peter's Tuesday in FDU's most recent action. The Knights trailed 5-2, but scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind and secure the 6-5 win. Dylan Sprague drove in two runs with a double and junior Ryan Brennan's two-run single to center scored the tying and go-ahead runs for the Knights in the 6-5 victory. Eric Snyder earned the victory for the Knights pitching 1.2 innings of relief.
Joel Roman leads the team with a .375 batting average and is followed by Matt McCann with a mark of .351. Brennan has batted in a team-best eight runs, while McCann and Sprague have scored a squad-high seven runs. Snyder (3.18 ERA) and Ryan McGrath (2.30 ERA) have recorded two wins apiece on the mound. Fairleigh Dickinson holds a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series between the two squads. The Knights won both of last season's meetings, 12-4 and 9-1, on March 15-16.
