Ninth-inning rally comes up short against Georgetown in Spring Break finale

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Lehigh baseball team couldn't complete a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth inning against Georgetown as the Hoyas claimed a 2-1 win in a pitcher's duel Saturday at the Snowbird Classic.
The Hoyas scored their two runs in the second and third inning. AC Carter was hit by a pitch before Chase Bushor walked and Beau Hall drove a single through the left side to load the bases. Austin Shirley followed with an RBI fielder's choice to score Carter before Lehigh sophomore starter Matt Kozemchak struck out a Georgetown batter to end the inning. Joseph Bialkowski sent a one-out double down the left field line in the third inning before scoring on a single through the left side off the bat of Carter as the Hoyas took a 2-0 through two and a half innings.
Kozemchak threw 2.1 innings before junior Brandon Kulp completed the third inning on the mound. Senior J.R. Edwards took over from there, throwing five scoreless, one-hit innings to keep the Mountain Hawks within reach. Junior Kevin Boswick continued the strong pitching performance, keeping the Hoyas hitless in the top of the ninth inning.
Junior Mike Garzillo sent a double down the left field line to open the bottom of the ninth and oust Georgetown reliever Kevin Superko. David Ellingson took over on the mound and junior Anthony Rinaldi singled to right field to score Garzillo and pull the Mountain Hawks within one at 2-1. Ellingson closed it out from there, however, forcing a flyout and pair of groundouts to secure the 2-1 win for the Hoyas.
Georgetown starter Matt Smith earned the win after keeping Lehigh off the board for seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out eight. Kozemchak suffered the loss.
Next up, the Mountain Hawks are scheduled to head to Delaware Tuesday at 3 p.m.
