BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team will head to Delaware Tuesday to face the Blue Hens in the consolation round of the Liberty Bell Classic. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. from Delaware's Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 1-3 weekend against Army, but will look to build upon a 5-2 comeback win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. Lehigh's ninth-inning rally fell short in a 9-7 loss in Sunday's nightcap. Senior John Elson went 6-for-8 with five RBI and four extra-base hits to lead the way for Lehigh on Sunday, while senior Justin Pacchioli followed with a 5-for-8 showing at the plate.
The Lehigh offense has been anchored by Pacchioli and junior Mike Garzillo as both Mountain Hawks have tallied a .405 batting average so far this season, which sits second in the Patriot League. Pacchioli's .560 on-base percentage leads the league, while Garzillo's .646 slugging percentage takes the top spot. Pacchioli sits among the top five in seven different Patriot League statistical categories. Garzillo leads the team with 23 RBI, while sophomore Jacen Nalesnik follows with 14 RBI.
Freshman Mark Washington will get the starting nod for Tuesday's game at Delaware. Washington has accumulated a 4.91 ERA through 7.1 innings pitched this season. His most recent appearance came last Wednesday at Coppin State when he allowed two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Delaware carries a 9-9 overall record into Tuesday's game and will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak. Joe Giacchino leads Delaware with a .338 batting average, while Diaz Nardo follows with a .310 mark and team-best 15 RBI. The Blue Hens are hitting .283 as a team compared to their opponents' average of .283.
Freshman lefty Colman Vila will get the start for the Blue Hens Tuesday. In his only appearance this season, Vila allowed two unearned runs in an inning of work out the bullpen against La Salle last Tuesday.
Lehigh and Delaware met just two weeks ago when the Blue Hens pulled out an 11-10 victory in a back-and-forth offensive battle. Garzillo led Lehigh offensively with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate that included a home run, a double and four RBI. Freshman James Bleming knocked in three runs on two hits.
Following Tuesday's midweek action, Lehigh is scheduled to host defending champion Bucknell in a four-game Patriot League series this weekend. Doubleheaders will be played both Saturday and Sunday with first pitch slated for noon.
