PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Lehigh baseball team suffered a heartbreaking 10-9 loss to Georgetown Wednesday afternoon at the Snowbird Classic. Lehigh held a 9-4 lead through four innings, but the Hoyas slowly chipped away and tied the game at nine in the eighth inning before walking off with a 10-9 win in the bottom of the ninth.
The Mountain Hawks put the game's first run on the board when senior Patrick Walshe sent a solo home run over the left field fence to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Hoyas countered with a four-run bottom of the inning thanks to a pair of RBI groundouts and a single through the left side as Georgetown jumped on top 4-1 through two.
Senior Justin Pacchioli led off the third inning with a double through the left side before sophomore David Young drew a walk to put two Mountain Hawks on base. Junior Mike Garzillo followed with his first career home run, a three-run shot to left center that tied the game at four. Lehigh sophomore starter Connor Donovan sat the Hoyas down in order in the bottom of the third before the Mountain Hawks put up another crooked number in the fourth.
Walshe sent a single to right field to open the fourth frame before Georgetown pitcher Simon Mathews plunked senior Tim McKay and issued back-to-back walks to senior John Elson and Pacchioli. Pacchioli's base on balls scored Walshe and was followed by a two-run single to left off the bat of Young as Lehigh took a 7-4 lead with no outs. Garzillo took first on a catcher's interference to load the bases before a fielder's choice from junior Anthony Rinaldi and a Georgetown throwing error plated two more Mountain Hawk runs to help Lehigh to a 9-4 lead after the top half of the fourth inning.
The Hoyas plated one run in each of the next three innings. Curtiss Pomeroy recorded a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth before a failed pickoff attempt and a ground out moved him to third. An RBI groundout scored Pomeroy before Austin Shirley walked, stole second, advanced to third on a balk and then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at nine at the end of the eighth inning.
The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but Georgetown reliever David Ellingson was able to work out of the jam to keep the score knotted at nine heading into the bottom of the ninth. Joseph Bialkowksi sent a one-out double to left center in the final frame before Pomeroy sent the game-winning single to right field to score Bialkowski and secure the 10-9 walk-off win for the Hoyas.
Pacchioli led Lehigh with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate and two runs scored. Donovan threw five complete innings, finishing with a line of six runs, only four of which were earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts. Senior Nick Stephens suffered the loss on the mound, while Ellingson earned the win.
Lehigh will have a day off from game action Thursday before returning to the diamond Friday to face Seton Hall at 10:30 a.m. and Western Michigan at 2 p.m.
