BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will look to defend its Patriot League Title as the Mountain Hawks head to West Point , N.Y for the Patriot League Championship beginning Saturday at the West Point Golf Course. The Championship will be a two-day, 54-hole event, with eight schools playing the first 36 holes Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday.

Golfers will play in twosomes for the first 36 holes will be re-paired into threesomes for the final 18. Six golfers from each school will compete and the lowest four scores counting towards team scoring.

The top performer will earn the Patriot League Most Outstanding Golfer award and the top-five finishers (including ties) will be named first team All-League. The next five (including ties) will be second team All-League and the top finishing freshman will earn the Patriot League Most Outstanding Rookie award. Coaches will select one of their peers as the Patriot League Coach of the Year.

The team champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals next month, while the individual champion also earns a bid to NCAAs if he is not already a member of the championship team.

The Mountain Hawks have had an up-and-down spring season finishing 12th in both the Wildcat Invitational and the Lafayette Invitational. Last week Lehigh only had three healthy players finish all 36 holes of the Navy Spring Invitational, as the already shorthanded Mountain Hawks had to withdraw from team scoring.

The squad rebounded earlier this week, defeating Lafayette 298-306 in stroke play Tuesday afternoon at Silver Creek Country Club. Junior Carlos Kim and sophomore Dave Olexson both shot 72, while senior Alex DiClemente aced the 16th hole on his way to a 76.

Kim and sophomore Harley Abrams have led Lehigh throughout the spring. Kim shot a final round 69 at Navy to tie for fourth place at two over par 144. Abrams paced Lehigh at the Lafayette Invitational, finishing in eighth place at six over par 148.

Also competing for the Mountain Hawks this weekend will be DiClemente, junior Zach Allinson and sophomore Johnny Heydt. Olexson and freshman Brendan Worthy are competing for the last spot.

DiClemente led Lehigh at last year's championship, finishing third at six over par 222 to earn first team All-League honors. Abrams joined DiClemente on the first team, tying for fourth place at 226, while Kim earned a spot on the second team, tying for sixth at 227. Head coach Henry D'Alberto was voted Coach of the Year by his peers as Lehigh won its first team title since capturing back-to-back titles in 1996 and 1997. The Mountain Hawks went on to make their first NCAA Regional appearance in Tempe, Ariz.

Last year, Lehigh held off Navy by seven strokes to win the team title. The Mountain Hawks were picked fourth, one point behind the Mids in this year's preseason poll. Tournament host Army edged newcomer Loyola by one point for the top spot in the poll. The Greyhounds played in last year's NCAA Regionals after winning the MAAC Championship. Also competing this weekend will be Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross and Lafayette. Lehigh will be paired with Loyola for Saturday's first 36 holes.

The West Point Golf Course plays just over 6,000 yards to a par of 70. Due to the threat of rain Friday evening, Saturday's opening tee times have been pushed back to 8:30 a.m., while the second round will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday's final round will feature tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
