Mountain Hawks start fast, but sit in fourth after 36 holes at West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's golf team started strong at the Patriot League Championship, posting a team score of 293 in the opening round, but the Mountain Hawks shot eight strokes worse in Saturday's afternoon round and fell from second to fourth after day one at the West Point Golf Course. The Mountain Hawks trailed Loyola by just six strokes after 18 holes, but are now 24 behind the leaders at 293-301-594 with just 18 holes remaining on Sunday.
 
Individually, sophomore Harley Abrams is in the hunt for medalist honors as he is tied for fourth at two over par 142. Abrams opened with a one under par 69 to share the 18 hole lead, and then shot 73 in the afternoon.
 
August Jonas of Navy holds the individual lead two under par 138 after back-to-back rounds of 69. Peter Kim of Army and Jimmy Dengler of Loyola are one stroke back, while Abrams and Brendan Lemp of Loyola are four back.
 
Junior Carlos Kim is the second lowest Mountain Hawk in the field as he is tied for 13th at 148. Kim matched Abrams with a 73 in the afternoon for Lehigh's lowest in the second round. Classmate Zach Allinson posted Lehigh's second lowest score in the morning, but struggled to an 83 in the afternoon and is tied for 30th at 155. Also tied for 30th is sophomore Dave Olexson, who rebounded from an opening round 81 to shoot 74 in the afternoon.
 
Senior Alex DiClemente is tied for 35th at 77-81-158 while sophomore Johnny Heydt shot 85-87-172 and is 47th.
 
Loyola has stormed to the front of the team race at 570 (287-283). The Greyhounds lead the host Black Knights of Army by five strokes, while Navy is third at 586.
 
The Patriot League Championship concludes Sunday with the final 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the West Point Golf Course.
