PHILADELPHIA - All four of Lehigh rowing's boats advanced to the grand finals in a highly successful day at the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River Saturday. The Men's Varsity Eight had Lehigh's highest finish (second place), ahead of Fordham, Franklin & Marshall and La Salle while only behind Drexel. The Mountain Hawks will return to action next weekend when they row against Colgate and Hamilton University.
"We had a great day," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It's the first time we've had the whole team in the grand finals in any regatta, which is great. We put great emphasis on that. Once we got to the finals, we have some work to do in some boats, but other boats stepped up."
Men's Varsity Eight came in third in its initial heat with a time of 5:46.41 before posting a time of 5:42.21 in the finals. Women's Second Varsity Eight also had a strong finish, placing third in the finals with a time of 6:35.23. Men's Second Varsity Eight came in third as well, finishing in 5:56.89.
"Men's Varsity Eight definitely had their most impressive race this year along with the Women's Second Varsity Eight," said Conley. "Both those crews really stepped up to the line in terms of putting themselves in a situation where they had an opportunity to possibly win, but were beat by better crews today. We learned what we need to work on for next week."
The Mountain Hawks enjoyed success against some strong competition and are continuing to improve.
"We looked for a schedule that was much harder with who we raced. We sought this race out because it provided much more competitive, condensed racing against better crews," said Conley. "Racing quality crews like Drexel, Washington College and Fordham in a much more one-on-one situation was beneficial for us."
The fact that the entire team enjoyed success was a huge step for the program.
"I think it's important that we always emphasize the team aspect, men and women together as Lehigh rowing," said Conley. "It's fantastic when every boat can support the other in some sort of sucesss and the team is doing better and getting better collectively. The results are showing that. It was a really, really solid day for us across the board."
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next weekend when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to face Colgate and Hamilton University on Apr. 26.
