ROME, N.Y. - The Lehigh rowing team won seven of eight races on Saturday afternoon in a strong performance against Colgate and Hamilton College. Both Varsity Eight crews won to set the tone for a strong showing as the Mountain Hawks now look ahead to their championship races in May - the Dad Vail Regatta (men and women) and Patriot League Championships (women only).
"It was a great day across the board," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We're definitely heading in the right direction heading into the May championship races. The Varsity Eights set the tone for the day, which was great. The men proved their ranking with a solid defeat of Hamilton and the women established themselves as a Patriot League contender by beating Colgate today."
The Women's Varsity Eight came in first, finishing in 6:52.83 ahead of Hamilton in second (6:55.91) and Colgate in third (6:56.33). The Men's Varsity Eight won its race with almost 18 seconds to spare, coming in 6:06.63 ahead of Hamilton in second (6:24.23).
"I think a lot of hard work over the last month and a half is leading to the student-athletes seeing the fruits of their labor," said Conley. "They worked hard over the winter to find their speed and it's really starting to show for them on the water."
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on May 9 when they compete in the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The women will then row in the Patriot League Championships the following Saturday (May 16) in Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts.
"I think coming off three really solid weekends of racing has given the team a lot of confidence," said Conley. "I'm excited to see where that puts us when we line up for our championship races in a couple weeks."
