BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a strong effort at the Kerr Cup which saw every boat make the grand finals, the Lehigh rowing team heads to Rome, New York on the Erie Canal Saturday to row against Colgate University and Hamilton College. The women's team will face both schools while the men will square off against Hamilton.
The Mountain Hawks have carried the success from last weekend into a strong week of practice.
"With the whole team seeing success last weekend, we have seen much more solid practices this week including new personal best scores on the erg and some of our best rowing on the water," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Now we just need to do it in all our races."
The Men's Varsity Eight led the way, finishing second in the grand finals ahead of Fordham, Franklin & Marshall and La Salle while the Women's Second Varsity Eight also placed third in the finals.
Lehigh looks to continue improving heading into a big May which features the Patriot League Championships for the women and the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta for both squads.
"It's always important to find more speed as we enter into the May regattas," said Conley. "I think we have found more speed and better fitness, but will have to do it in multiple races at these big races and that can be difficult."
When looking ahead to this weekend, Conley said, "We are looking for this to be a good preparation for the upcoming championship races. Colgate has given us some great races and we are hoping it helps to see them directly. We haven't raced Hamilton directly this year, so seeing a new competitor will keep us on our toes."
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on May 9 when they compete in the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The women will then row in the Patriot League Championships the following Saturday (May 16) in Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts.
