
Mountain Hawks host Iona Thursday in final game before league play

BETHLEHEM, Pa.- The Lehigh baseball team looks to extend its winning streak while making final preparations before league play begins when the Mountain Hawks host Iona Thursday at 3 p.m. on the Goodman Campus Baseball Field. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but forecasted cold temperatures and possible snow have forced the game to be pushed back a day. The Mountain Hawks ride a four-game win streak into Thursday's game after completing a weekend sweep of Mount St. Mary's on the Goodman Campus Baseball Field. Lehigh's bats came up big in a 14-1 win to open the series, before coming from behind to win the second game 5-1. The Mountain Hawks closed out the successful series Sunday with an 11-inning 7-6 win to earn Lehigh's first series win since March 9-10, 2013 at Coppin State.

Lehigh holds an overall record of 9-8 heading into Thursday's game and is hitting a league-leading .296, which also ranks 39th in the nation. Junior Tim McKay leads the team with his .421 batting average and is one of six Mountain Hawks hitting over .300. Senior Joe Abeln, junior Connor Faust and sophomore Mike Garzillo are tied for the team lead with 12 RBI, while junior John Elson and senior Tyler Brong follow with 11 and 10, respectively.Â

On the mound, sophomore Kevin Long and seniors Mike Burke and Joey McNamera picked up wins during Lehigh's sweep of Mount St. Mary's. Long has been a key reliever out of the bullpen and holds a team-best 1.96 ERA. Burke and classmates Nick Stephens and Nick Cassell lead the team with 22 strikeouts each.

The Gaels visit Bethlehem with a 2-11 overall record, coming off a 1-2 showing against Fairfield last weekend. Iona hits .214 as a team with a squad ERA of 6.79. Chris Russo leads the Gaels at the plate with his .389 batting average followed by Matt Byrne (.375). Christian Choman has driven in a team best seven RBI. On the mound, Bill Maier holds a 3.42 ERA through 26.1 innings, while six Gaels have ERAs above 10.

Following Thursday's game, Lehigh will head to defending league champion Army Saturday and Sunday to begin Patriot League play. Doubleheaders will be played both days, with action set for 12 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
