Rowing opens spring with mixed results against Philadelphia area schools

PHILADELPHIA Â - The Lehigh rowing team opened its spring season on Saturday with dual races on the Schuylkill River as the women's squad faced Drexel, Temple and Delaware and the men faced Delaware. The Men's Varsity Eight and Freshmen Four each won their races to lead the way.

"It was a mixed day from top to bottom," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "There were positives and negatives. In terms of positives, we know we can stay with some of the better boats in the Dad Vail League, which is good. For a first race, it's not the result we wanted, but it's not a bad start."

On the women's side, Lehigh's Second Varsity Eight finished in 7:29.15 while the Varsity Four came in 8:34.26. Prior to the Varsity Eight's disqualification, the crew finished in second place ahead of Temple and Drexel.
The Men's Varsity Eight beat Delaware with a time of 6:21.10 while the Freshmen Four came in 7:28.00 to beat Delaware by 34 seconds.

"The varsity men and freshmen men both won their races today and they did a great job of not allowing the conditions or other boats impede their progress, which was good," said Conley. "That was a big point of emphasis today. The varsity women got out pretty quickly on the field, which is what we wanted, but we came up short taking the wrong lane with our race course."

The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday (Mar. 29) when they compete in the Murphy Cup.
