Mountain Hawks wrap up busy weekend with success at Iona Invitational

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Lehigh rowing team wrapped up a busy weekend of racing with a successful day at the Iona Invitational Sunday, facing the host Gaels, Robert Morris, Fordham, Fairfield and Marist. Featuring both morning and afternoon races, Lehigh's Women's Varsity Eight, Men's Freshmen Eight, Men's Freshmen Four and Women's Second Varsity Eight all finished first in a race on the day.
"I thought the team overall handled challenging conditions, fatigue from racing at the Murphy Cup (Saturday) and a new race course incredibly well," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We needed this weekend to understand how to rise above all these challenges and still succeed. All the boats learned a great deal about racing and developed greatly. It will prepare us well for not only next week, but also later on in the season if we can build upon these things and not become complacent."
The Women's Varsity Eight won its first race of the day, coming in at 6:50.09 ahead of Robert Morris and Iona. The Men's Freshmen Eight captured first by more than 24 seconds, finishing in 6:22.13. Meanwhile, the Men's Freshmen Eight also came in at 6:00.97, finishing first by almost 12 seconds. The Women's Second Varsity Eight won its afternoon race, coming in 7:19.72 ahead of Robert Morris who was right behind in 7:22.55.
The Mountain Hawks return to action this Saturday when they host Lafayette in the annual River Cup on the Lehigh River in Allentown.
