Lehigh claims River Cup with dominant effort against Lafayette

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team won all but two races against archrival Lafayette to claim the men's, women's and overall trophies for another year. The Mountain Hawks Varsity Eight boats each picked up impressive victories to set the tone for a successful day on the Lehigh River in Allentown.
"Even though we saw them in a few events at the Murphy Cup, it's a lot more personal and nerve racking in the duel because we know they're going to bring their best and we hope to bring ours," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We did a great job of stepping up today."
The Women's Varsity Eight came in first with a time of 6:23.00, more than 10 seconds ahead of Lafayette in second. The Men's Varsity Eight beat the Leopards by more than five seconds, finishing in 5:26.50.
"The varsity eight boats did a great job. I feel like they both did a great job bringing their 'A' game and leading their races from start to finish," said Conley. "Lafayette tends to have a fast start, but these crews did a nice job of getting off the line and establishing a nice margin early on and extending it throughout their races."
Other winners included the Men's Freshmen Four (6:22.32), Men's Varsity Four (A) (6:23.00), Men's Varsity Four (B) (6:27.60) and Women's Freshmen Four (7:19.00).
The day was special, not only for the victories over Lafayette. It was also a celebration of Lehigh Rowing.
"Each year, it's amazing to see more alumni and friends of the program that have not been back in a long time," said Conley. "I really look forward to seeing this grow bigger each year."
Lehigh will return to action in two weeks at the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
