BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a big 9-8 win over archrival Lafayette on Wednesday, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team travels to Baltimore Saturday to face Patriot League newcomer Loyola at 4 p.m. The Greyhounds are a perennial national power and already have two wins over ranked foes this season. Lehigh is eying a 3-1 start in league play for the first time since 2011.
Defense led to the Mountain Hawks' victory over the Leopards as Lehigh was able to escape thanks in large part to senior goalie Alexandra Fitzpatrick, who made 14 saves. Jumping out to a 6-1 first-half advantage, junior Carli Sukonik pushed the Lehigh lead to 7-1 after a free position goal at 22:12 of the second half. The Leopards stormed back, closing the gap to 9-8 with 3:16 remaining, until a caused turnover and groundball pick up by junior Kelly Scott put Lafayette away for good.
Senior Chelsea Retaletato, sophomore Kendall Garden, freshman Allison LaBeau and Sukonik led the way for the Mountain Hawks with two goals each. Garden finished a stellar outing adding two groundballs and three caused turnovers to her multi-goal showing. Scott also added three caused turnovers.
Loyola enters the weekend with a 5-4 record, riding a three-game winning streak defeating Towson, Lafayette and Bucknell in a one-week span. The Greyhounds began the season with impressive wins over #6 Virginia and #17 Princeton. Loyola also dropped a slim 14-13 final to #5 Florida.
The Greyhounds are led by senior Marlee Paton whose 22 goals and 34 points lead the team. Taryn VanThof leads the way in draw controls with 47 to go along with 21 points (16 goals, five assists) and a team-leading 21 groundballs. Annie Thomas is second on the team in points with 30 (18 goals, 12 assists). Molly Wolf has started all nine games in goal for the Greyhounds, posting a 10.14 GAA, with a .441 save percentage.
Lehigh is 5-5 all-time against Loyola with the Greyhounds winning the last three meetings against the Mountain Hawks. The teams haven't met since 1991.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Wednesday when they host Cal at 4 p.m. in the first game of a Lehigh Lacrosse doubleheader. The Lehigh men will host Monmouth at 7 p.m.
