BALTIMORE - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team hung tough with perennial top 10 team Loyola at times, but the Greyhounds proved too much in downing the Mountain Hawks 12-4 on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh pulled within 5-2 late in the first half, but the Greyhounds used four straight goals to open a 9-2 advantage, which was too much to overcome.
"Loyola is a very talented team," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Our team is capable of a better performance than they delivered today, however. We will need to learn from this experience in order to compete with a team of Loyola's caliber in the future."
Four different Mountain Hawks scored a goal: freshman Krista Dampman, sophomore Kendall Garden and juniors Carli Sukonik and Emily Solenberger. Garden added a team-high four groundballs and two draw controls. Senior Alexandra Fitzpatrick made seven saves in goal, five coming in the first half.
Loyola scored just 30 seconds into the game, then less than two minutes later, added three more goals in the span of 48 seconds to make it 4-0 at the 26:50 mark.
However, the Mountain Hawks bounced back by holding the Greyhounds scoreless for the next 16:26, scoring their first goal in that span (by Sukonik) to pull within 4-1 midway through the first half. Dampman pulled Lehigh within 5-2 at 8:10, but Loyola scored the final two first-half goals for a 7-2 lead after 30 minutes of play.
The Greyhounds came out with two early second-half goals, but Garden made it 9-3 at 26:15 of the second half. Loyola went on to outscore the Mountain Hawks 3-1 the rest of the way for the 12-4 final.
Final shots were 25-12 in favor of Loyola while the Greyhounds held a 20-17 edge in groundballs and 13-5 advantage in draw controls. Fitzpatrick made seven saves in the first 48:50 before being replaced by freshman Taylor Tvedt who didn't see a shot on goal. After Loyola scored at 14:35 of the second half, the Mountain Hawks didn't allow a shot on goal the rest of the way.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Wednesday, hosting Cal at 4 p.m. in the first game of a Lehigh Lacrosse doubleheader. The Lehigh men will host Monmouth at 7 p.m.
