
Lehigh travels to Fairleigh Dickinson Round Robin Tournament this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team heads to Teaneck, N.J. this weekend to compete against Fairleigh Dickinson and NJIT in a pair of doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at the Fairleigh Dickinson Round Robin Tournament. The Mountain Hawks look to build upon their three-game winning streak as they head into their penultimate weekend of non-league play. Lehigh (5-5) faces NJIT (3-3) Saturday at 11 a.m. before taking on FDU (3-7) at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Mountain Hawks open the day against the Knights at 11 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. contest against the Highlanders.
 
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Coppin State Monday in their most recent action. Strong pitching and effective offensive execution helped Lehigh to the 9-3 and 8-2 wins as the Mountain Hawks strung together a three-game winning streak for the first time since March 31-April 3, 2013. Starting pitchers Nick Stephens and Colin Gotzon picked up the victories during Monday's doubleheader, while Kevin Long and Nick Cassell recorded the saves. Senior Joe Abeln drove in three runs in the pair of victories while going 4-for-7 at the plate. Freshman Jacen Nalesnik went 4-for-8 while also recording three RBI.
 
The Mountain Hawks are hitting an impressive .321 as a team, led by junior John Elson's .405 batting average. Sophomore Mike Garzillo holds a team-best nine-game hitting streak, while junior Connor Faust has driven home a team-leading nine runs. On the mound, Long's ERA of 1.17 is the lowest on the team and he holds a 2-0 record through 15.1 innings pitched. Gotzon has recorded an impressive 17 strikeouts through just eight innings to go along with his 2.25 ERA. Stephens holds a 2-1 record and 3.94 ERA, while senior starter Mike Burke has tallied a 4.82 ERA. Cassell has notched a team-best three saves.
 
Lehigh met Fairleigh Dickinson for two games in the season-opening Davidson Tournament as the teams split the pair. The Mountain Hawks claimed the first contest 4-2 on Feb. 22 before the Knights won the second game, 7-5. Joel Roman's .364 batting average leads the team and is followed closely by Zach Tondi's .353 mark. As a team, the Knights are hitting .273 compared to their opponents' .305. FDU's starting rotation is headlined by Logan Frati, who has thrown 20.1 innings and allowed eight earned runs to tally a 3.54 ERA. FDU will face NJIT Friday at 3 p.m. before taking on Lehigh Saturday.
 
NJIT's Friday contest with Fairleigh Dickinson will be the Highlanders' first since March 2 as the team carries a 3-3 record into the weekend. NJIT picked up a pair of wins, 8-2 and 13-3, over Coppin State in its most recent action. Cody Kramer leads the Highlanders with a .455 batting average, followed by Mike Rampone's .375. Matt Weckerle has recorded a team-best seven RBI. NJIT's starting rotation is comprised of Alex Daniele, Ian Bentley, Matt Coughlin and DJ Roche. Daniele's 1.38 ERA through 13 innings leads the team.
 
Following this weekend's tournament, the Mountain Hawks will head to Temple for a Tuesday matchup at 3 p.m. on Temple's Ambler Campus.
