BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team will begin its 2014 journey on Friday as the Mountain Hawks head to Davidson, N.C. to take on Mount St. Mary's and Fairleigh Dickinson. The weekend gets underway Friday at 2 p.m. vs. the Mount and will be followed by a pair of contests against Fairleigh Dickinson at 1 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.
Senior captains Joe Abeln, Tyler Brong and Mike Burke, along with the rest of the upperclassmen, have stepped up to lead a class of 11 freshmen. The Mountain Hawks graduated a talented senior class of four after last season, but bring back many experienced players who are ready to make a run for a Patriot League title.
Lehigh was projected to finish fifth in the Patriot League this season. Abeln and fellow senior Nick Cassell were both named preseason All-Patriot League players and junior Justin Pacchioli was tabbed as the preseason Patriot League Player of the Year by Baseball America.
Lehigh returns three of its four All-League selections from a season ago in Pacchioli, Abeln and Brong. The 2013 Mountain Hawk squad finished with an 18-29 overall record and 5-15 league mark.
Friday afternoon's game will be the first of the season for Mount St. Mary's, as well. The Mount was predicted to finish sixth out of seven teams in this season's NEC preseason poll as the 2013 Mount squad finished with an 11-37 record. Lehigh and Mount St. Mary's met two times last season with both contests going into extra innings. The Mountain Hawks claimed the first meeting 9-8 in ten innings, but fell 10-9 in the 12-inning second game.
Fairleigh Dickinson was projected seventh in the NEC preseason poll after finishing last season with a 12-36 record. The 2012 season-opening Davidson tournament was the last meeting between Lehigh and the Knights as the squads split a two-game set. Fairleigh Dickinson won the first game 8-7, but the Mountain Hawks responded with a 6-3 win in the second contest.
Following this weekend's contests, Lehigh will head to Seton Hall Wednesday Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. before hitting the road for a spring break tournament in Port Charlotte, Fla. on March 1. The Mountain Hawks make their home debut March 8 when Lehigh hosts Coppin State in a three-game weekend set on the Goodman Campus Baseball Field.
